Hereditary sequel: The new Paranormal Activity?

Much like Paranormal Activity, Hereditary opened to great reviews from critics and is being called the most frightening movie in years. Will it become the new horror franchise?

Paranormal Activity, which premiered in theaters in 2009, made history! The movie was put together for a total of $15 thousand! Production kept everything simple and the cast were new at this. It became an instant success, collecting over $193.3 million worldwide at the box office! Paranormal Activity is all anyone talked about for a long while (just like Hereditary is a hot topic right now). Not only because of the scares, but also its incredible success. With numbers like that, a sequel was sure to follow. Not to mention, fans had many unanswered questions.

The second movie, titled simply Paranormal Activity 2, was able to increase its budget, but at $3 million it’s still considered very small. It accumulated over $177 million.

Here are the budget numbers and box office collections for all six Paranormal Activity movies: 

• Paranormal Activity budget $15 thousand, box office gross $193.3 million
• Paranormal Activity 2 budget $3 million, box office gross $177 million
• Paranormal Activity 3 budget $5 million, box office gross $207 million
• Paranormal Activity 4 budget $5 million, box office gross $142.8 million
• PA: The Marked Ones budget $5 million, box office gross $90.9 million
• PA: Ghost Dimension budget $10 million, box office gross $78.9 million

As you can see, after a small decrease, the franchise bounced back and made even more than the original. However, numbers went downhill after that. Still,  compared to its budget, all six movies are considered triumphant.

For Hereditary, the budget is not known. The horror movie gathered $13 million opening weekend, though. It may not seem like much, but it has not premiered overseas, and who knows, the budget may be pretty small.

Also, just as the PA movies do, Hereditary follows a family being haunted by an evil entity. The movie leaves viewers with many questions as well. There is still a lot we don’t know about the Graham family. And is it just me, or does Peter still appear to be there and not fully possessed! As I said, SO many questions! Will a sequel give us some answers or will fans be left wondering what the hell just happened?
