What we know about Gran’Ma from Preacher? We take a look at the mysterious new character coming to Season 3.

When Preacher returns for its third season later this month, new characters will have an impact on Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy – but none likely more than Gran’Ma.

Gran’Ma (played by Betty Buckley) is Jesse’s maternal grandmother who lives in Angelville, but an angel she is not. In flashbacks last season, we saw Gran’Ma torturing Jesse, punishing him be putting him into a coffin and then submerging him into a lake.

While this doesn’t sound like Jesse wants to spend time with, she has something that Jesse desperately needs and wants.

More from AMC

Gran’Ma is able to bring people back from the dead and Jesse’s love, Tulip, was killed in the season 2 finale.

Teasers from AMC show Tulip alive and kicking, so it seems Gran’Ma will be able to work her magic.

What else do we know about Gran’Ma?

Looking at the Source Material

Even though Preacher has changed things from the original graphic novels, we can still look at the source material to learn more. Jesse’s grandmother’s name is Marie L’Angelle. In the graphic novels, she kidnaps Jesse and Tulip and holds them hostage. She kills Tulip, who is revived by God.

In short, Marie is an evil woman who uses her power to control those around her by any means necessary, including torture. She used the coffin as a way to assert her control.

She heads a dark and twisted family and it’s a wonder Jesse didn’t turn out worse than he did. But the reason Jesse became a preacher had a lot to do with this grandmother teaching him about the Christian faith. Once she had Jesse under control, she used him to become a man of God.

She eventually died in a house fire when her oxygen tanks exploded.

Looking at the trailers

The trailers make it seem like Gran’Ma isn’t much different than the evil woman from the books. While Jesse is desperate and resorts to asking her for help and saying he would do anything, he doesn’t seem to want to stick around.

In fact, in one of Jesse’s voiceovers, he says, “As soon as I get my power back from Starr, we’ll kill them all. The Grail. Gran’Ma.”

Things haven’t gone Jesse’s way with his grandmother since returning to a place he never wanted to see again. But since God is a on joy mission dressed as a weird fetish dog, he doesn’t have anyone else who can save Tulip.

What to expect?

Even though Starr still exists, Jesse is going to have to fight evil on multiple fronts. Starr still wants Jesse for his own purpose, but Gran’Ma will be the most immediate issue. Given she is also a woman of strong faith, she is probably not going to take kindly to the vampire Cassidy.

I suspect Gran’Ma will be even more dangerous than Jesse even realizes. Even though Gran’Ma is wheelchair bound, she has special powers that come with a price when she uses them.

Also, since she is the one who actually brings Tulip back to life, I don’t see her as killing her again. That part of the storyline will likely take a different course from the graphic novel.

Preacher season 3 premieres June 24 on AMC.
