After 10 million #SaveShadowhunters tweets, $16,000 raised for The Trevor Project, and a #ShadowhuntersPlane over Netflix, fans now plan to take on New York’s Times Square with a digital billboard.

Last week, Shadowhunters fans united to bring the #ShadowhuntersPlane to life, a aerial advertisement that circled Netflix in Los Angeles for three hours. Keeping the momentum going, leaders from within the fandom have now also organized a surprise for the East Coast in the form of a digital billboard in series’ home city: New York.

Just a few miles north of the (fictitious) New York Institute in Shadowhunters, fans have organized a digital billboard that will air for five minutes on Friday, June 29 at 3:00 PM EST in Times Square. While we’re not completely sure who the ad is meant to be targeting, approximately 330,000 people from around the world walk through Times Square each day. Whereas the plane banner was for a specific audience, this one seems to just be for whomever happens to be in the area at the time it’s displayed.

This advertising announcement comes off the heels of several other successful milestones from the #SaveShadowhunters front, including over 10 million tweets for the single hashtag and millions of other tweets with secondary tags. There’s also an official petition on Change.org that has over 133,000 signatures.

Yes, the fans are clearly putting time money into their advertising projects, but they’ve also worked to raise money for charity, currently closing in on a $16,500 donation for The Trevor Project that is likely to continue growing, and has already been supported by cast, crew and creative team members.

While it doesn’t look like Shadowhunters will be going to SDCC this year after all (mainly because we think the cast will be in Toronto filming the series finale during the convention), we will continue to update you on show and fandom news throughout the year.
