Netflix’s Sacred Games will be the first Indian original series available on the streaming service. So, here is a preview of what the new series has to offer.

Netflix has been slowly pushing into the international market with titles like 3% (Brazil) and Dark (Germany). Now, the streaming service hopes to continue their success with the debut of their first Indian series Sacred Games.

Based on a novel by Vikram Chandra, the story of Sacred Games follows an a cop named Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan) who becomes entangled with Ganesh Gaitonde, a crime lord reportedly missing for 16 years. Then thrust deep into the gangland of Mumbai, Singh must take action to save the city.

Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane direct eight hour-long episodes, and the series appears to be in good hands. Kashyap has won numerous awards, including the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) from the French government for his contributions to film. Udaan, Motwane’s debut film, was selected to compete in the Cannes Film Festival in 2010.

Back in February, Netflix announced two other originals from India, Selection Day and Bard of Blood. With the addition of other upcoming titles, their commitment to international viewers demonstrates the value of the expanded market. The good news here is that audiences will be getting more diverse content from their streaming service.

The hope here is that series like Sacred Games succeed next to popular titles like Stranger Things or 13 Reasons Why. The new trailer, however, gives a glimpse into the stylized crime drama Sacred Games aims to be.

The brutal intensity of Saif Ali Khan gives the trailer an exciting and fierce edge. With the combination of proven directors behind the camera, it is therefore a safe bet that Sacred Games will great.
