In Supernatural’s Bedtime Stories, the show introduced the idea of a girl’s spirit remaining child-like, despite being in a coma for years. Just where did that Supernatural lore come from?

Supernatural lore on vengeful spirits took a slight twist in Season 3, Episode 5. “Bedtime Stories” brought up the question of what happens when someone is in a coma? There is plenty of real lore and belief about this. Here’s a look at what the show did with the lore and a look at real thoughts on coma patients.

Supernatural lore about comas

In the series, a young girl’s spirit remained the 8-year-old the girl was when she went into the coma. Despite her body getting older, her spirit never had the chance to get older. She couldn’t grow up, as her experiences and mind didn’t have the chance to grow and expand.

All the spirit wanted was for her father to know the truth and accept it. This wasn’t going to be easy, but knowing that her dad had let go, she was able to move on. Allowing the physical body to die in the way that the soul did.

What really happens to the spirit in the coma?

More from Supernatural

Nobody really knows what happens to someone when they’re in a coma. While doctors understand the physical effects and what is needed for someone to fall into a coma, there’s no way to really tell what actually happens. Patients who come out of comas share different experiences.

One of the theories is that the spirit remains in the state it did when the body went into the coma. A few shows have used this type of Supernatural lore. So Weird is one that stands out for me, which involved a girl connecting to people in comas and other situations through the internet. I remember one of a woman who had been in a coma for years, but in her mind she was still a child.

There have been stories of people possibly in a part of Heaven, waiting to return to their bodies. Others have shared experiences of being stuck in a long nightmare or dream. Then there are people who just don’t remember a thing; it’s all blank.

Supernatural opted for the spirit remaining a child. The spirit had died and had become vengeful without meaning to. She just wanted to move on.
