#ThrowbackThursday gives us a chance to revisit old episodes and talk about interesting plot points. For today, let’s take a look at that moment between Dean and Dream!Dean in Supernatural Season 3, Episode 10.

I love #TBT. I have a legitimate reason to look back over old episodes and bring up old plot points and scenes. This week, I’ve moved onto recapping Supernatural Season 3, Episode 10. The intention here is to have all the recaps in one place for you to read and it just so happens that I’ve come up to one of my favorite moments–in fact, possibly my favorite moment of all–of the third season. It’s all about Dean vs. Dream!Dean.

Right off the back, this was a fun and interesting scene. We got to delve into Dean’s mind; into his dreams where his mind works through the fears and the horrors he’s scene. Having a Freddy Krueger-like episode was already interesting for me, but I didn’t expect this.

What we got was a full insight into the truth behind the facade. His walls are strong but they’re not impenetrable. And that’s what makes Dean vs. Dream!Dean so important and so amazing.

His fear is him with a twist

More from Supernatural

He is his own fear. Part of him may not even realize that. Even now, he may not be fully accepting that he’s his own worst nightmare. With a twist, of course.

Dean doesn’t just fear himself, but what he’s going to become. Dream!Dean is everything he dislikes about himself. We get the memories of being a good little soldier, following an obsessed man in every way possible.

It’s certainly not surprising that what he is now isn’t the only fear. There’s the future; or lack of Earthly future. He’s terrified of Hell. That clock is counting down on that deal.

The timing for this is also perfect. Up until the previous episode, Dean had that inclining of hope that there was a way out of the deal. The crossroad demon said that Sam would die, but Ruby was there. Demon or not, she had promised Sam to find a way to save Dean. Deep down, even if he didn’t want to believe it, a part of him hoped. Ruby dashed that hope at the end of Episode 9.

So, here we were, in the 10th episode knowing that Dean was going to hell–and that he would be a demon. Hope was gone and fear was the only thing to replace it.

It’s not often we get to see into the minds of the Winchester brothers. Both are able to cover up their feelings a lot. This is one of the first times we really get a glimpse of Dean’s fears and it doesn’t disappoint.
