Supernatural Season 3, Episode 12 finally gave a name to the big bad that had been teased three episodes earlier. Meanwhile, we wondered how the Winchesters were going to get out of their sticky situation.

Think back to Supernatural Season 3, Episode 9. The demon, controlling Tammi, had told us there was a new player in town. That “new player” was finally introduced to us in Episode 12, titled “Jus in Bello.” At the same time, we got to see a different side to Victor Henriksen and realized that, actually, he’d make a damn good hunter.

When the Winchesters landed in Henriksen’s grasp, it all looked like it would be over. Let’s take a look at how they got out of the mess.

The arrest

More from Supernatural

It all started with an attempt to get the Colt back from Bela, which was stolen in “Dream a Little Dream of Me.” However, Bela is already “two states away” and has set up a trap for the Winchester brothers. It’s not surprising when they’re arrested and Special Agent Victor Henriksen is the one in charge.

They have to head to a local sheriff’s office first, which is small and has just a skeleton crew on duty. Henriksen doesn’t want to lose the Winchester brothers this time and neither does the FBI. When FBI Deputy Director Steven Groves insists on a chopper being used, we know the FBI is taking the threat of these two hunters seriously. They’re even going to be taken to a maximum security prison in Nevada until trial.

When Groves does arrive, he steals time with the Winchesters alone. That’s when we find out Groves has been possessed. He shoots Dean and Sam is forced to do an exorcism. The demon escapes, leaving a dead Groves behind. While everyone knows the Winchesters didn’t kill Groves, they don’t believe in exorcisms.

A demon attacks

Meanwhile, another FBI agent, Calvin Reidy, goes to check on what happened to the rest in the chopper. Everyone is dead and the chopper explodes and Reidy is killed by a demon. It’s soon clear that the sheriff’s office is under siege and they need to barricade the doors, with just Henriksen, Nancy the secretary, the deputy, and Sheriff Melvin Dodd left with the Winchesters.

While patching Dean up, Sam is able to steal Nancy’s rosary. They both know something is about to happen. Sure enough, the sheriff walks in to get everyone out of the station. Henriksen, who has been possessed, kills the sheriff but the Winchesters manage to exorcise the demon with the holy water Sam made from the toilet thanks to the stolen rosary.

Henriksen finally believes that the Winchesters are innocent of everything they have supposedly done. Well, not quite innocent of everything but that they had some good reasons for doing it all. He also makes it clear that he needs their help to stop the demons from coming in. They need weapons from the Impala, so Dean rushes out just in time. He watches the demons rush into town.

Soon enough, locals are standing outside the sheriff’s office possessed by the demons. They’re not able to get in because of the salt on all the windows and doors, but they do make sure nobody can get out. Still not taking chances, Dean gives everyone anti-possession charms and shows that he and Sam have their anti-possession tattoos.

Ruby steps in to help

One of the windows wasn’t protected properly and Ruby is able to get into the building. She shares that the new big bad that was previously mentioned in Supernatural Season 3 is Lilith. There’s a spell to vaporize all the demons within the radius, killing both Lilith and herself, but it means the sacrifice of a virgin. Dean isn’t willing to let a virgin die.

Ruby isn’t going to stay with that and decides to walk away. The Winchesters have their own plan and it certainly works well. Letting the demons in, Sam is able to exorcise them all over the PA system. However, one demon is able to get away.

Henriksen shares that he’ll tell the Winchesters were killed in the chopper explosion to get the law off their backs. That’s enough for them and they hightail it out of town.

It’s not the end of Supernatural Season 3, Episode 12, though. We finally get to meet Lilith, who hasn’t taken on the form of a child. The Winchesters find out about Lilith destroying the whole sheriff’s office with everyone inside on the TV, as Ruby tells them that a demon got out and told Lilith what happened.

It was a hard lesson for the Winchesters to learn — sometimes the sacrifice of one is worth avoiding the loss of many. However, they have always proven to attempt to save as many lives as possible and not make sacrifices unless it’s themselves.
