We may never get a Supernatural spin-off. Mark Pedowitz explains why that may be the case, as he shares his concerns over the franchise beyond the Winchester brothers.

During the TCAs, Mark Pedowitz, Head of Entertainment at The CW, shared his thoughts on a Supernatural spin-off, according to Deadline. Unsurprisingly, he shared that the network is open to hearing on ideas for a spin-off on the popular series. He praised the franchise as being an excellent one, but things don’t look good for the potential to branch out beyond that.

Pedowitz is concerned that there’s no franchise beyond the current show and that means no chance of a successful spin-off. Considering the network turned out the asked for spin-off Wayward Sisters, it’s not surprising that he’s “concerned” about the lack of future for the franchise after Supernatural comes to an end.

Wayward Sisters was the second attempt to bring in a spin-off. The first time was in Season 9 with the episode “Bloodlines.” Set in Chicago, it was about five monster families, giving it a bit of a mobster and Romeo and Juliette twist. It didn’t get past the backdoor pilot stage, with many viewers instantly negative about the episode.

One of the problems with “Bloodlines” was that the backdoor pilot brought in completely new characters. Wayward Sisters rectified that by bringing in characters fans care about and want to see on their screens. It was about Jody, Donna, Claire, Alex, Patience, and Kaia. Two of those characters were created for the series, but the other four were liked by many.

The backdoor pilot was a ratings and social media success. It was surprising when the spin-off wasn’t picked up. If that didn’t get picked up, it’s unlikely that something else will.

A complaint about the spin-offs is the lack of the Winchester brothers. However, that wouldn’t make the new show a spin-off. The point of a spin-off is to focus on another set of characters within the same universe and Wayward Sisters was perfect for that. Those who just want the story of the Winchesters would still have Supernatural and those open to other characters would have the spin-off.

Pedowitz is clearly not saying a definite no. He’s open to listening to other spin-off ideas. Could I suggest one on the Irish or British Men of Letters? Or maybe the history of the American Men of Letters? Or the adventures of Rowena and Apocalypse Charlie? How about the hunts of Bobby and Mary? Or Castiel saving Heaven? There are plenty of storylines there that could be turned into a spin-off. Just can the franchise go beyond Supernatural? That’s The CW’s concern.
