Was Wayward Sisters too connected to work as a Supernatural spin-off?

Mark Pedowitz has shared more about the reasons The CW passed on Wayward Sisters. It turns out the characters may have had the exact opposite problem to the previous Supernatural spin-off.

Many fans are still bitter and upset about Wayward Sisters not getting picked up to series. During the TCAs this week, Mark Pedowitz shared why it didn’t happen. We already knew the premise didn’t sound promising enough to work for the network, but it turns out there may have been another problem. It may have been too connected to the original series to work as a Supernatural spin-off.

According to Deadline, Pedowitz shared that the characters were too connected to the Winchester brothers. Considering all the talks of a crossover with the Winchesters already, I guess that’s not surprising. However, there’s a huge issue with that considering the exact opposite was the problem when it came to Bloodlines.

The former Supernatural spin-off had the issue of characters not being connected enough. Fans didn’t have the chance to feel anything for this larger cast for the spin-off idea. It meant the episode failed and the show was never picked up. Fans even said they wanted characters they knew something about; felt something for.

Now we’re told the Wayward Sisters characters are too close. It almost sounds like The CW doesn’t want a Supernatural spin-off at all. That’s definitely not surprising considering Pedowitz also said he’s concerned there isn’t a franchise after the Winchesters hang up their hats–or maybe it should be hang up the keys to Baby.

If Jody and co. are too connected, what does this mean about other spin-off ideas? Doesn’t that mean a spin-off with Castiel would never work? That surely means one about Charlie and Rowena couldn’t happen. Really, the one idea that could work is a prequel series about the American Men of Letters or even a look at the Irish or British Men of Letters. Or maybe a prequel series of John Winchester hunter. Or how about Bobby and Rufus (or is Bobby too connected).

It also doesn’t make sense when you consider Angel. He was Buffy’s love of her life in Buffy the Vampire Slayer; a consistent presence for three years. Cordelia was also there as the sort of frenemy. The two made a successful duo to help kickstart Angel with new character Doyle. Then Wesley came in afterward, another character from the original series. Wouldn’t they have been too connected if that was really a problem?

The wording sounds odd. To me, it sounds like The CW doesn’t want a Supernatural spin-off and doesn’t believe one will ever work regardless. This is just a way to attempt to get fans off their backs. Maybe its time to shop a spin-off elsewhere.
