Castle Rock returns with a new episode that introduces us to Henry’s son and gives us a look at the Kid interacting with others more.

Things get weirder in “Filter” as we learn more about Henry’s past. As Henry gives his father a proper grave site again, the Kid starts to snoop around and we get a glimpse of Henry’s past through some home videos. Henry also sees two people who he say at Alan’s ceremony in the previous episode, so naturally, he’s wondering who they are and why they keep showing up.

Henry’s son Wendell comes to visit, which honestly doesn’t seem like the best idea considering what all is going on in the town. However, it does give us a nice moment between Wendell and Ruth as she tells him why she leaves the chess pieces around the house.

After finding the Kid watching the home videos, Henry takes him to Juniper Hill Psychiatric Hospital (from IT), but he doesn’t say there very long. We also see a crow that died and fell from the sky as they arrive there, which is becoming more of a regular occurrence. That can’t be good.

As for Henry, his story is the one that gets increasingly weirder as the episode goes along. Molly tells him that he killed her father through her and he’s in disbelief at the notion that he’d do such a thing, let alone that it would even be possible to do that. She tries to explain her powers to him, but it’s not something he wants to hear from her right now.

Henry has a flashback to the woods. He then follows the route in the woods that he sees the home videos that the Kid was watching. This leads him to run into Odin Branch and Willie. The former is deaf and the latter is the interpreter. Henry’s ringing in his ears is getting louder and louder, too.

Odin apparently knows all about it and calls it a schisma, which is the voice of God. Odin explains that Henry’s father, Matthew, was the one who came up with the filter, too. Supposedly, that room is where Henry will hear the truth and the room is in Odin’s RV. They lock Henry in, but not before we find out that Odin made himself deaf and plans to do the same to Willie. The Kid previously asked Henry, “Do you hear it now?” We now have an answer as to why he asked that.

The Kid sends Alan to get Warden Lacy’s car, which is at a junkyard. This limits how much we see Alan in the episode because the junkyard isn’t in Castle Rock from the looks of it. When he returns at the end of the episode, he runs into the house to check on Ruth because the Kid has blood on him. All we see is the house looking like a mess as the episode ends.

Henry’s past comes into focus a little more in this episode and anyone who has ever read Stephen King books knows that things can get quite odd. This episode fits that bill well. There’s also a little nod to King on Molly’s signs since they have “Live like a King” on them. The Easter eggs are still present and that lets you know that this is still King’s playground and we’re all just living in it.

Castle Rock airs on Wednesdays on Hulu.
