On this day nine years ago, the Supernatural Season 5 premiere aired for the first time. It’s a good chance to look back at the impact of the episode for the season and the show.

The Supernatural Season 5 premiere aired for the first time on this day nine years ago. Where were you on Sept. 10, 2009? I was definitely getting ready for the episode, waiting impatiently to learn what would happen to Sam and Dean Winchester.

This is a season that many of us wondered if it would be the end. It was the wrap of the story that Eric Kripke had planned out. As a fan, as much as I didn’t want it to end, I was ready for it. I’d gone into the season expecting a fully wrapped up season. And the finale certainly didn’t leave me disappointed. However, this is about the premiere.

Supernatural Season 5 picked up exactly where the fourth season ended. Lucifer’s cage had been opened and we had no idea how Sam and Dean Winchester were going to get out of the danger they’d found themselves in. Right away, the answer was given; they ended up on a plane suddenly thanks to God’s actions.

The episode was certainly impactful. After four seasons, we were coming to the end of this foreshadowed story. This was the start of the end, with the introduction of Lucifer and the feeling that the brothers wouldn’t get out of this one; at least one of them was going to have to make some sort of sacrifice.

The Supernatural Season 5 premiere also puts our heroes in an instantly bad position. Dean and Sam are divided still; their bond weakened from the events of the fourth season. Bobby was possessed and made a sacrifice to save the Winchester brothers. While we feared it would be at the expense of his life, it ended up being at the expense of his use of his legs, setting up an eventful season for Bobby Singer.

It’s also in this episode that we finally learn the importance of Sam and Dean Winchester in the apocalypse. We learn why Dean was needed in the big picture. While it initially seemed like Castiel was saving Dean from breaking the first seal, it was clear that God knew the bigger picture. Dean was the vessel for Michael.
