Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Meet the characters

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will be here before you know it. After that exciting and creepy trailer, it’s time to meet the characters of the series.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is the highly anticipated new series coming to Netflix. The first official trailer dropped last week and it certainly made it clear that this isn’t a reboot of the comedy Sabrina the Teenage Witch with Melissa Joan Hart.

Now it’s time to meet the characters of the series. Netflix has released first-look images of each individual characters, along with a bit of a backstory.

Sabrina Spellman

Of course, we have to start with the titular character (new image is the features image of this post, which also includes Susie Putnam, Rosalind Walker, and Harvey Kinkle). We’ve seen plenty of images of her, played by the delightful Kiernan Shipka. Half-human, half-witch, Sabrina learns that she has a decision to make. Will she become a witch or will she let her mortal life win out?

She attempts to live a normal life as a student at Baxter High, but it’s not always easy. She’s the force that protects the mortal world from the dark forces that threaten to take over the world. The series follows her as she learns to handle her powers.

Harvey Kinkle

Fans of Sabrina the Teenage Witch will already know about Harvey. He’s Sabrina’s boyfriend and in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will be played by Ross Lynch. As the son of a coal miner and a mortal, he’s completely unaware of the dark forces and magic.

It turns out that dark forces are attempting to keep Sabrina and Harvey apart. He doesn’t realize this, so what’s going to happen throughout the series?

Hilda and Zelda Spellman

Lucy Davis and Miranda Otto are playing the roles of Hilda and Zelda Spellman respectively. They’re Sabrina’s aunts, who know all about witchcraft and Sabrina’s destiny. Hilda is the more nurturing of the two, with a wicked streak when needed. She likes to brew up spite jars and make love potions.

Meanwhile, Zelda is a devout witch with a great belief in serving the Dark Lord. She’s extremely protective of Sabrina and is described as the Cain to Hilda’s Abel.

Ambrose Spellman

Those following news about Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will be aware of Ambrose Spellman, Sabrina’s warlock cousin. Played by Chance Perdomo, he’s from England and has been sent to the Spellmans by the Witches Council under house-arrest. He’s not allowed to leave the funeral home, at all.

Ambrose has a witty sense of humor and is described as Sabrina’s partner in crime. He likes to get up to mischief. He’s also pansexual.

Rosalind Walker and Susie Putnam

In the featured image, Rosalind and Susie are by Sabrina’s side. Played by Jaz Sinclair and Lachlan Watson respectively, the two are Sabrina’s best friends at Baxter High and members of the WICCA club in the school.

Rosalind is the daughter of the minister at Greendale, which could cause some friction with the WICCA club. He’s also outspoken and empowered, so will likely appeal to those who love strong-willed females.

Susie is bullied in the school, but that doesn’t stop her from being optimistic and brave. She lives on the outskirts of the town on a farm and deals with the many supernatural threats coming to her home.

Agatha, Prudence, and Dorcas: The Weird Sisters

One of the questions you will have certainly had from the trailer is who the three women are at the table singing happy birthday. They appear a number of times throughout the trailer and it turns out they’re known as The Weird Sisters.

Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, and Abigail Cowen play Agatha, Prudence, and Dorcas respectively. They’re powerful teenager witches who attend the Academy of Unseen Arts. Due to Sabrina being half-mortal, they view themselves as superior. They remind me a little of Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter.

Nicholas Scratch

Another student at the Academy of Unseen Arts is Nicholas Scratch, who befriends Sabrina when she starts attending. He is immediately drawn to her and sparks fly. He’s played by Gavin Leatherwood in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Father Blackwood

You’ve seen him in some promo photos and now we finally get a name and descriptions. Richard Coyle plays Father Blackwood is an ambitious and ruthless High Priest of the Church of Night. He’s also the Academy of the Unseen Arts’ Dean.

He’s described as having a terrifying dark agenda, which causes conflict with Sabrina and some of the other coven members. Does this mean he’s going to side with Madam Satan in releasing the devil?

Mary Wardwell, aka Madam Satan

Finally, it’s all about Doctor Who‘s Michelle Gomez’s character, Mary Wardwell, better known as Madam Satan. She’s one of the teachers at Baxter High. In fact, she’s Sabrina’s favorite teacher and mentor.

Initially good, Mary is possessed by the Devil’s handmaiden, Madam Satan. She tries to lure Sabrina down the dangerous Path of Night and is extremely cunning and manipulative. She’ll be the big bad of the season.
