Mr. Mercedes has reached a point where Brady has to make the next move, but others are more aggressively trying to stop him.

Without his meat puppet Al (Mike Starr) to lead around, what exactly is Brady (Harry Treadaway) going to do? It’s not like he can use a body that has a bullet hole through the brain, even if Al was barely above vegetative. It looks like Mr. Mercedes is going to have to figure out another avenue for his mischief and mayhem.

Furthermore, the bullet through the brain ravaged Brady’s mental basement. How will he remain strong enough to purposely stay in a coma and avoid prosecution.

He called me Kermit

It ain’t easy being green. Irishman Bill Hodges (Brendan Gleeson) took a real beating before turning Al’s head into a canoe. Lucky for him, his ex-wife Donna (Nancy Travis) heard the entire thing and called 911. She even heard the key detail when Al said the name Kermit. There is no way he could have known that, and only Brady knew from the message board taunting.

Donna, Jerome (Jharrel Jerome), Ida Silver (Holland Taylor), and Holly (Justine Lupe) gather at the hospital to support, while Montez (Maximiliano Hernández) visits Bill to discuss details of the case. The latter discussion unveils Bill’s thoughts that Al was being controlled by Brady, mostly because the blip of recognition just before brain matter redecorated the walls.

Can Mr. Mercedes be stopped?

Bill’s brush with death shakes Holly terribly. I mean, she was already on edge before, afraid of her own shadow, terrified of not being home in time for Wapner. Convinced now more than ever, Holly wants to prove the connection to Dr. Felix Babineau (Jack Huston) and his experimental, illegal medication.

More from Entertainment

Nurse Maggie Wilmer (Tammy Arnold) gives Bill meds for the night (the good stuff), so he kicks everyone out before he has a dream. After his last vivid dream of having his penis in a noose, you’d think he’d treat sleep a little more like the kids from Nightmare on Elm Street. Nonetheless, he gets drowsy as Brenda’s furrowed brow is so intense that she might have to check into the hospital for a migraine.

Secondary to proving the medical link, Brady can be moved from the hospital. Montez barks at Dr. Babs, pretending it was not a two-way betrayal, then lets Pettimore (Adam Stephenson) it’s time to move Brady. Meanwhile, Holly sneaks into Brady’s room to change the tape holding down his IV.

Pulling the plug

Completely ignoring the fact that she valued her career over her relationship to the father of her unborn baby, Cora Babineau (Tessa Ferrer) gets a visit from her desperate husband at the Vitalta labs. Since Cora is the definition of callous, she doesn’t really care. She told the Chinese higher-ups about the issues, about Brady’s impending transfer, and they want as far away from FDA implications as possible. They’re pulling the plug.

At the same time, Montez gets called to the DA’s office to talk to his boss. The DA has pulled the plug on plans to move Brady. Dr. Babineau is already in the office and has painted a rosy picture of restitution for everyone who has suffered at the hands of Mr. Mercedes. That’s only possible if Brady stays, and the DA has the connections – the owner of the hospital – to make Brady’s residence permanent.

It is too late to pull the physical plug from Brady; he’s moving on.

Moreover, he’s a reincarnated Beatrix Kiddo, because he starts with a toe wiggle, then a foot, and before anyone notices, he’s out of his bed and the hospital. Muscle atrophy be damned. Everyone else be very afraid.
