Sam is still searching for Dean, but has to deal with a few pesky demons first. Meanwhile, Jack deals with his lost grace on the Supernatural season 14 premiere.

What do people want? We all want different things: peace, love, power, money. On Supernatural, Michael!Dean is going around asking people what do they want and they give stock answers, but he knows they’re lying.

Yet, the people Michael!Dean is running from have explicit wants. Sam wants his brother back, Jack wants his powers, Mary wants her son back and also the companionship of Bobby, while Castiel wants his best friend to come home.

The things they want, Michael!Dean can’t or won’t give them.

The powerful beginning to Supernatural’s 14th season showcased the common theme of family. They’re stronger together and it was reiterated when Castiel had his talk with Jack. As Jack lamented over the loss of his powers, Castiel had to remind him that his powers are not what define him.

Jack has a good heart and he is part of a family, which should be the most important thing. They have each other’s back no matter what. And if anyone knows how Jack is feeling, it’s Castiel because he went through a time without his grace – and Castiel wasn’t exactly calm about it either.

Seeing Sam in a leader role was a little different. Normally, the doling out of tasks and heading into bad situations head first is Dean’s MO. But in this case, Sam actually seemed to have a thought out plan when facing the demons. It still took a little luck to get past Kip and his cronies, but Sam is amazingly strong in so many ways.

He’s more analytical and quieter.  Sam has a more understated way of handling things. But his statements carry weight, so when he proclaimed there would be no King of Hell and they would have to go through him, it felt like more than just the demons in the room heard him.

*I’m going harder on my theory that Rowena will be the Queen of Hell. After all, it’s Sam that will be the one to kill her and this seems like a way that could happen.

There was not a whole lot of Jensen Ackles in this episode of Supernatural. The bulk of the Season 14 premiere featured those in the bunker and what they’re doing to find Michael!Dean, and yet it didn’t feel like Supernatural lost too much without him. That’s not a knock on Ackles at all – in fact, it’s more on how the show has become more than just the Winchesters.

Initially, I had hoped the Michael!Dean storyline would take about seven episodes, but now I hope it’s resolved much more quickly than that. SPNHunter says it will.

Supernatural did a good job of highlighting just how different the dynamic of the group is without Dean too. While Dean is definitely serious, he also provides levity with his quirky one-liners.

The only kind of ray of sunshine throughout the episode was between Mary and Bobby sharing a beer…and probably a little bit more later on.

Other observations:

  • Jack and Castiel really are a matching pair. I expected Cas to stand next to Jack in the mirror so they could compare battle wounds.
  • Michael!Dean getting involved with vampires is not good for anyone. We saw what the starved-out vampires were like in the alternate universe, that can’t be good if that’s what he’s trying to create in this universe.
  • I wonder how Chuck feels that Michael hates humans too. Isn’t that one of the reasons Lucifer fell from Heaven?
  • I don’t really don’t check out spoilers so I didn’t realize Mark Pellegrino would be back. It was a pleasant surprise.

Tune into Supernatural on the CW on Thursdays at 8/7c.
