Supernatural Season 4, Episode 9 recap: The Winchesters meet a fallen angel
In Supernatural Season 4, Episode 9, the Winchesters met a fallen angel for the first time. Meanwhile, Sam’s summer is revealed.
Supernatural Season 4, Episode 9 introduced more angels. This time it was the first look at a fallen angel, although she had no idea that she had fallen at the time. As the Winchesters were drawn more into the Heaven storyline, Sam’s summer is revealed.
Here’s everything that happened in the episode titled “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” as I continue my Season 4 rewatch while waiting for more new episodes of Season 14.

Supernatural Season 4, Episode 9 opens with Anna Milton sharing a tale about Lilith. She’s talking to her doctor at the Conor Beverley Behavioral Medicine Center, where she shares that Lilith only needs 66 out of 600 seals to let Lucifer free.
Suddenly, a demon attacks and she’s forced to use some type of psychic power to stop the demon and save herself. We’re left wondering what this woman is. Another one of Azazel’s psychic kids? A demon? How about a fallen angel.
The Winchesters learn of Anna from Ruby, who says that Anna is being chased by demons. Of course, Dean doesn’t want to initially believe it but the brothers head to the hospital where the doctor shares she’s been talking about the apocalypse and demons. Her sketchbook also shows that she knows about the seals.
When the brothers realize her parents are dead, the Winchesters find them in a church. Anna immediately recognizes them because the angels have been talking about Dean, the one who will save them.
Alastair makes himself known
As they talk, a demon called Alastair appears. He’s immune to Sam’s powers and it’s soon clear that he and Dean have a history. During the attack, Ruby gets Anna out, even though Anna is terrified of Ruby. Anna can see Ruby’s demons face and it turns out Anna can see the face of all demons, a little like Dean before his hell deal.
It’s after this that we finally learn why Sam trusts Ruby. We learn that Ruby turned up. She’d been released from Hell by Lilith with the instructions to kill Sam, but Ruby decided to save Sam instead. She also leaves the body of an alive woman and chooses the body of a brain-dead coma patient–the soul has left the body.
Over the course of the summer, Sam exorcizes as many demons as possible and ends up accepting Ruby’s help to train his powers. It involves demon blood and the two gained a sexual bond.
Finding Anna and Ruby
After the backstory, Ruby manages to get the Winchesters a note to say where she took Anna. When they get to the women, Sam admits that the demon-killing knife has been lost in the fight against Alastair.
Suddenly, someone appears but it’s not the demon they were expecting. Castiel and Uriel appear with the demand to hand Anna over. She has to die.
It would be easy to assume that this was the midseason finale, but it certainly wasn’t that cliffhanger was answered the following week.
