Why is Michael setting traps with other monsters in Supernatural?
Supernatural brought us a monster-of-the-week episode involving a djinn. It turns out Michael is setting traps for hunters, but why when he’s so powerful?
Michael can kill monsters with a flash of his eyes. He doesn’t need to lift a finger. This makes sense considering he’s the most powerful being on Earth right now in Supernatural Season 14. But if he’s so powerful, why is he getting other monsters to do his dirty work?
We’ve watched Michael build an army of monsters. This is sure to bite him in the butt eventually considering monsters are like the Scottish clans: they just can’t work together for too long! Of course, Michael is a little like Bonnie Prince Charlie at the moment, not realizing that the monsters will always end up turning against each other, unable to agree despite having a common goal.
But if he really is so powerful, does he need traps for hunters? What type of plan does his have?
Keeping the hunters busy

My biggest theory is that right now Michael has found a way to keep the hunters busy. While he could go after every hunter, that would take up valuable time. And why do something yourself when you can get others to do it for you?
Michael needs to keep the hunters busy, especially the Winchesters and the AU hunters in the bunker. With them preoccupied with looking out for traps, Michael can continue his work to build his monster army and look for that spear that can harm him. It’s a side story that probably won’t take too long to wrap up.
Keeping the monsters occupied
Meanwhile, Michael has also found a way to keep the monsters occupied. Those who are gullible enough are doing Michael’s bidding with the promise of more power in the future. They’re greedy creatures after all.

Right now, they don’t have a reason not to trust Michael. They don’t know that Michael has gone against two deals he brokered in Supernatural Season 13.
If there are monsters that Michael doesn’t really like or doesn’t really want to give more power too, he can placate them by keeping them occupied. Of course, this could be how monsters turn against him. They find out he isn’t an archangel of his word and that leads to mutiny.
Whatever it is, Michael has a big plan. The monster traps are likely just decoys while he puts together the master plan to destroy all humans and create the world that he wants.
