25 Days of Sam-mas Day #12: Will a romantic connection to Sam Winchester ever survive?

It’s a running joke in Supernatural that any woman with a romantic connection to Sam Winchester will die. Will there ever be one who doesn’t?

Rule number one in the Supernatural world is to never sleep with or date Sam Winchester. Anyone who does will end up dying. Is it possible for any woman to survive a romantic entanglement with Sammy?

Well, it has happened. When the Winchesters were on the case with the siren, Sam did end up having a one-night stand with the medical examiner. At the time, she was the red herring; the one believed to be the siren. Once we learned the truth, many naturally suspected that she would end up killed but that never happened.

Unfortunately, death is more common than life when it comes to romantic entanglements with Sam on the series. We just have to look at Jessica, Sarah Blake, Madison, and Eileen. Some were killed by Sam because they were monsters, some were killed because of demons after Sam, and others were killed because of other forces. Whatever the case, women who have been romantically connected to Sam have mostly been the victims in his story.

Can that ever change? You would hope that it would. Sure, there have been times we’ve seen one-off women who have never been seen again. Presumably, they’ve survived because we haven’t seen them again — a death has to happen on screen to make it legitimate.

But do the one-night stands really count? What about the women who he starts to give his heart to?

The only person to survive so far that he’s given part of himself to is Amelia. After hitting a dog, he stayed with her instead of searching for Dean, who was in Purgatory at the time. This was a chance at a normal life and he got it for about a year. In the end, he left her to return to hunting. After some debate, he chose his brother over his girlfriend.

It shows that there is hope. We could finally see a woman for Sam Winchester. However, I’m not sure we will. The ones who have been perfect for him have been killed off and the hunter’s life is quite a solitary one.

We could see him never really finding that special someone that doesn’t die after a romantic entanglement with him. Amelia just shows it’s possible for not all serious girlfriends to die.
