As Gordon and Bullock venture into the dark zone of Gotham to search for some kids held hostage, Bruce finds the fabled “Witch” to try and cure Selina. What did we learn on this week’s episode of Gotham?

Previously on Gotham, we got a taste of what the city is like after the fall of the bridges, with gangs like Penguin, the Sirens, Scarecrow’s gang, and the like carving up pieces of the city. We saw some glimpses of masked figures inside the GCPD and a scared young orphan arrived from the “dark zone,” a section of the city that hasn’t been claimed by a gang and is unaccounted for.

We also caught up with our favorite will-they-they-won’t duo in Bruce and Selina. She still paralyzed from Jeremiah Joker’s bullet to the spine in the fourth season finale. Selina is still taking it a bit hard (from the back of the room “that’s an understatement”) as she tries to take her own life, leaving Bruce desperate to help her.

Meanwhile, the Riddler has been losing chunks of his memory as Ed Nygma appears to be occupying his body during the night. All we’ve gotten to see of what Ed’s doing so far is some crazy map with yarn connecting all the points that Riddler has woken up, so hopefully, we will find out more of what Ed’s game is (my guess is something to do with Lee).

Tonight, the GCPD ventures into the dark zone for a rescue mission, the Witch’s identity is revealed, and the Riddler gets some unexpected help. What did we learn from this week’s episode of Gotham?

1. Old flames die hard

After speaking with the aforementioned young orphan who made it to the green zone last episode, Jim and Harvey decide to take a trip into the dark zone to rescue the other kids he tells them about. Doing so will require them to pass through Siren territory. Thus Jim must ask for help from Barbara, who is less than enthused to see him for he committed the heinous crime of not immediately killing the Penguin after Tabby’s death.

After eventually getting assistance from Babs in the form of some heavily-armored truck, the police venture into the dark zone and the teeth of an ambush. A brief fire-fight ensues as the GCPD makes their way to the home of a gang clad in miner masks and talking about some smoke that lets you see the future. It’s all very “Immortan Joe and the Halls of Valhallah” but Gordon is able to free all the kids who are bound together in a chain gang.

However, Gordon and Bullock are left behind in an ensuing skirmish after their car’s tires are shot out and are forced to flee to a nearby hotel. There, Harvey finds severed body parts in the basement while Gordon finds a frightened young boy. Unfortunately for our favorite detectives, they have been tricked by Orphan and Mother, the latter of whom tries to hack the cops to pieces.

After escaping the mother/son rave dance with knives and strobe lights, Jim and Harvey again encounter the freakazoid miners, who are still looking for their workers back. But then, player two enters the mix in a bunch of creepy “day of the dead” looking folks. Just as they’re about to have it out over Gordon’s remains, Deux ex Barbara shows up in monster truck/tank hybrid to mow them all down and drive the survivors out of the dark zone to safety.

The Sole Siren agrees to help Jim if he’ll help her with her last goal in life: killing Penguin. She and Jim meet up with Lucius Fox, who has started restoring a block of apartments for kids and families to stay. It seems like a nice ending to the episode, but there’s still that little matter of Jim owing Babs that we know she won’t forget.
