In the midseason premiere of The Resident, three characters’ fates are decided, and the consequences of each are shocking enough to prove this show still has plenty of curveballs up its sleeve.

Finally, The Resident, my favorite crazy medical thriller, is back in action! This week we see the effect of Lane’s (Melina Kanakaredes) manipulation on Doctor Bell (Bruce Greenwood) and no one is happy about her getting out of prison on bail, least of all, her many victims. One pays a visit to Chastain this week in dire need of help after Lane’s overactive chemo treatments have left her with severe spinal damage.

We also learn the fate of Marshall (Glenn Morshower), Devon (Manish Dyal), and potentially Julian (Jenna Dewan). But if you were hoping things would get easier for any of these characters after that whopper of cliffhanger back in the winter finale then you may get your hopes crushed by this episode.

More from FOX

Especially if you stick around for the promo for next week’s episode which looks to find several of our favorites with their careers in jeopardy due to the dastardly QuoVadis corporation.

Julian Lynn

  • Status: Presumed dead.

When we last saw Julian she was involved in a car crash orchestrated by Gordon Page (Michael Weston) and although we don’t get 100% affirmation of her death, it is heavily implied. Her phone is the hands of the QuoVadis team who waste no time doing a clean sweep of her home for any and all involvement to the company in question, in addition to ensuring they clear out all possible evidence she may have on their misdeeds.

To make matters worse, it appears Devon is going to be framed for Julian’s disappearance based on the fact Gordon handed Julian’s phone to the police in addition to mentioning his name in connection with her disappearance. All those unanswered texts from him on her phone combined with him showing up at her house earlier that day will not bode well for Devon.

Marshall Winthrop

  • Status: Alive… for now.

Just when it appeared Conrad (Matt Czuchry) and Marshall were on the road to recovery and that their relationship may be getting on track and headed towards a healthy place, we learn Marshall wants to prepare for his inevitable death.

While Doctor Randolph Bell is able to save his life after he succumbed to cardiac arrest due to his Crohn’s disease, Marshall tells Conrad he wants to take action in order to assure his assets and his son are taken care of after his death. He doesn’t want anyone to try to save his life again should his body fail once more. His 20-year battle with Crohn’s is dancing close to the end but I can’t see Conrad willingly giving up on his father if he does have any kind relapse.

Doctor Lane Hunter

  • Status: Dead as a doornail.

In the most shocking turn of the night, Doctor Lane Hunter is shot dead as a result of her own heinous deeds. The main patient of the week is Natalie (Elia Monte-Brown), an ex-patient of Lane’s who suffered greatly due to her misusage of chemotherapy. Because of Lane’s actions, Natalie developed spinal damage and was unable to walk.

Thankfully, the skilled team at Chastain was able to save her life and physicality but her husband still found it a bitter pill to swallow to see Lane waltzing boldly back into Chastain and out of jail when her bail was posted. He decided to take matters into his own hands and pay Lane a visit after hours where he shot her dead.

This turned out to be excellent news for Doctor Bell as at that very moment he was about to succumb to Lane’s blackmail and admit he was arrested for soliciting sex (if you recall from the beginning of the season in that strange plot-line where Bell was sleeping with prostitutes who looked like Lane we all collectively decided to forget), instead of reneging on his testimony and assisting Lane in going free.

Now it looks like his secret is safe once more, for the time being anyways.

Odds & Ends

  • I’ve loved watching Conrad and Marshall’s relationship develop, it’s one of the strong points of the show especially when we get to see Conrad in a rare vulnerable moment.
  • Gotta admit, I was hoping Lane’s downfall would grant us some mutually assured destruction by bringing Bell down too, and we were so close! But alas, not yet.
  • Devon and Mina (Shaunette Renée Wilson) living together? Not something I expected but a duo that should be fun to watch, especially because Mina won’t let his recent lapse in judgment and idiotic actions fly.
  • I really hope The Resident isn’t flirting with the idea of Nic (Emily VanCamp) and Alec (Miles Gaston Villanueva). I love Nic and Conrad too much for this and we don’t need another cheating storyline like hello, didn’t we just see the Devon and Priya (Tasie Lawrence) fallout?!

A new episode of The Resident titled “Operator Error” airs Tuesday, Jan. 21 on FOX.
