One of the big questions from Supernatural viewers is why someone can’t use the archangel blade on Dean. Wouldn’t it kill the archangel but save Dean like it did to Lucifer? Here’s one big reason why it can’t be used, plus a few small ones.

When Supernatural Season 14 began, we found out that somehow Nick had survived after Lucifer had been killed. Never mind the fact that this hadn’t happened before. That didn’t matter. It looked like there was a way to take care of Michael without killing Dean.

Caution: There are spoilers from the most recent episode in this post.

But there was one glaring reason why that couldn’t happen. That reason still stands now. It’s got nothing to do with where Michael is but where the other archangels are.

More from Supernatural

Only an archangel can kill an archangel. So to kill Michael, Gabriel, Lucifer, or Raphael would need to be around and all three are dead. Even our own Michael is, for all intents and purposes, dead. There is no archangel to stab Dean with to get rid of Michael, so it wouldn’t work.

But what about Jack? He’s half-archangel and now has his powers thanks to the soul-sucking magic. Is it possible that he could use the archangel blade?

Sam and Castiel don’t understand everything about the blade and why Nick survived, so it’s not surprising that they wouldn’t even want to attempt it. But then there’s another issue.

Michael isn’t the one in control right now. He’s locked away somewhere in Dean’s head and that’s where he’ll stay if Dean goes through with whatever happens in that one single book Billie brought him. If the archangel doesn’t have control, is it possible to kill it?

It’s something we’ve never seen happen on Supernatural. Of course, the writers could use this to their advantage. They could even have Dean stab himself if they wanted to push the mythology. But I’m not sure how many of us would buy it. I wouldn’t.

In the end, I do think that the archangel blade will be used. How it will work out, I’m not sure, but it was too much of a plot point to overlook.
