Who had the most terrifying nightmare in Legacies Season 1, Episode 9?
By Mads Lennon
The Salvatore Boarding school faces one of the scariest monsters yet in the form of a dream demon on the newest episode of Legacies.
With the urn in Hope’s possession it was only a matter of time before a new monster was lured from the malivore to try to get their hands on it. I was surprised how downright scary this latest Legacies creature was. Its real name is an Oneiroi, or a dream demon, but it disguises itself as a Night Hag, which is essentially a similar creature, one that haunts dreams and can torment you with your worst fears in order to get what it wants
If this sounds familiar, that’s because it is. Many supernatural shows conquer dream terrors in some shape or form in their runs. Buffy has done it, Supernatural, Charmed, most recently, even Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. But it works for a reason. It allows writes to divulge important information about characters and their emotions, in addition to their greatest fears and weaknesses. That’s why this episode of Legacies excels, it allows introspection on behalf of characters like MG, Kaleb, Landon, and Rafael.
Hope concocts a plan to trap the demon but for it to work, the boys will have to fall asleep and attempt to lure the creature out into reality.
Kaleb
Honestly, if I had to pick one nightmare that freaked me out the most, I think Kaleb would be the winner. He’s strapped to a chair in a straitjacket with a Hannibal Lector-style mask on his face and forced to watch brainwashing videos about how evil and bad vampires are.
All the while, the Night Hag hovers nearby, taunting him.
Landon
Landon’s nightmare is a close second. He is trapped in a classroom and the walls begin to close in on him. As someone with claustrophobia, this scenario is one of my worst fears. It freaked me out in Star Wars and it still freaks me out here.
Not only is Landon in danger of being crushed to death, but Night Hag actually reveals her face! She looks exactly how you would expect, decayed, yellowed teeth falling out of her gaping mouth, eyes bugged out, everything about her is rotten. And to make it even more scary, she peels her face off and from the carcass of the woman in the veil, the true Oneiroi demon of nightmares emerges looking like a cousin to the monster from Jeepers Creepers.
MG
MG’s dream is ripped right from the Stefan Salvatore playbooks. He envisions himself in the aftermath of a ripper binge with a pile of bodies on the floor surrounding him. We know MG has been struggling with feeding ever since he let Kaleb convince him it was a necessity to drink human blood and now clearly, that craving is stronger than ever and he’s still trying to figure out how to control it.
More from CW
- The CW’s culture of pulling shows continues as Everyone Else Burns and Run the Burbs are removed from the schedule
- All American: Homecoming season 3 release updates, strike delay, and more
- The CW is out of the superhero business with Superman and Lois canceled
- The Spencer Sisters filming locations: Where is the CW drama filmed?
- The Librarians: The Next Chapter release updates and everything we know so far
The violence is plenty terrifying, but the scariest part here is what it means for MG and his impulses buried deep down.
Rafael
While Raf’s dream isn’t full of blood or monsters, it does contain a different kind of fear. In the aftermath of he and Hope’s training tussle from earlier in the day, it is clear Raf can’t shake off his feelings for Hope so easily.
But more than that, he cares about Landon and the last thing Rafael ever wants to do is hurt him. In his dream, Hope makes multiple attempts to seduce him and Raf struggles to say no each time, it’s clear he has real feelings for her. Which is what leads him to essentially ending their friendship by episode’s end when he realizes he could be jeopardizing his relationship with Landon.
Odds & Ends
- There were so many fantastic moments in this episode. The slow-motion walk, the team up of MG, Kaleb, Raf, and Hope. Watching Hope take down a full-fledged dream demon. This show is such a good time.
- “I’m not gonna worry about losing you Hope because I’m always going to be the guy that finds you again.”
- Lockwood mansion reference!
- Are you on the Landon/Hope train or the Rafael/Hope bus? Personally, I like both, but I also like Hope being independent.
- It looks like one of the big villains is going to be the strange guy following up leads on people related to the malivore and since he’s investigating Landon’s mother, his path is inevitably going to lead him straight to the Salvatore Boarding School.
A new episode of Legacies titled “There’s A World Where Your Dreams Come True” airs February 7th on The CW.
