The Walking Dead Season 9’s Omega revealed a backstory to the Whisperer leader. Could the dialogue between Henry, Daryl, and Lydia set up a face-off between Alpha and Carol?

The Walking Dead Season 9, Episode 10, titled “Omega,” had a revealing backstory of The Whisperers’ leader, as well as Lydia’s traumatic history. You could tell Alpha’s daughter was brainwashed to the point of Stockholm Syndrome and it looks like Daryl and Henry may have broken her of those chains of influence under Alpha’s thumb. Of course, Lydia/Omega told them that The Whisperers would never come for her once captured, but apparently, that’s not the case as seen at the show’s conclusion.

Does Carol and Alpha’s shared history foreshadow an encounter?

The episode had me wondering about Daryl and Henry’s discussion about Carol. Lydia got insight to the nature of Carol via Henry and a conclusion had arisen thinking both Carol and Alpha had pretty much the same history involving an abusive spouse. The lopping off their own hair is a big clue to their similarities.

Now I have not read much of the comics, but my focus is on the show as they plan on taking it a different direction. The comics portray Alpha and The Whisperers as quite ruthless, so I wouldn’t put it past the show to at least stick to that theme. Carol had her moments when she had to take action that was quite merciless. Her history shows this, especially at a time where she was just starting to go down that path by killing Lizzie in The Walking Dead Season 4’s “The Grove”.

Carol all impressed us on her survival prowess when she took on the people of Terminus and the Wolves in the Alexandria invasion. There was a bit of a lull for a while until recently she set fire to the remaining Saviors. From what I’ve noticed, she’s very good about catching those who cross her off guard.

I can’t help but think that Carol may be evenly matched in life experiences as Alpha had done some pretty ruthless things herself. These experiences formed who Carol is today and, with a history that parallels with that of Alpha, you have to wonder if the crew is setting things up for a Carol vs. Alpha encounter. Will it be a passive encounter where they both come to realize their similarities and the directions they’ve taken? Or will it be an all-out battle of equal wits between their ability to take whatever means necessary to survive?

The result of a seismic shift of Alpha and Carol, Rick Grimes is an example

There seems to be a trend these days for movie and TV creators to attempt to understand why people take actions the way that they do. To get the audience to understand their behavior even though it’s not right.

There seems to be a constant theme in the franchise of having to do what is necessary to survive. Rick Grimes had been drilling this into the people he’s encountered in the post-apocalyptic life. That said, we’ve come to discover everyone else has done atrocious things in the interest of self-preservation in the TWD franchise.

Carol may be seen as quite evil by others if they don’t know her whole story. Rick Grimes has done so much as to rip someone’s throat out with his bare teeth and gutting someone from stomach to sternum in “A” (Ep. 416). This caused a seismic shift in Rick’s psyche and, apparently, we are starting to see these in future episodes with other characters.

Carol is a great follow-up to this. I wouldn’t put it past Alpha and Carol to encounter each other as they are the product of their own environment and shared experiences. If this is the case, it’ll be interesting how it’ll turn out.

How do you think The Whisperers will fare this season and what actions will they take to the good people of Hilltop of they don’t give up Alpha’s daughter? Will Lydia/Omega leave Hilltop after having experienced that proven communities are growing and remaining sustainable, regardless of what Alpha’s been telling her?
