It’s time for Dean to head back to the past in Supernatural Season 5, Episode 13 and this time Sam is with him. Why do they need to help Young Mary and Young John this time?

In Supernatural Season 4, we got the chance to see Dean meet his parents when they were younger. Supernatural Season 5, Episode 13 sent him back to the past, this time with Sammy along for the ride. Just why could they possibly need to head to the past?

Well, we can thank Anna for this, as she goes on a mission to prevent the apocalypse. How could she do that? Well, by preventing Sam’s birth, of course. Well, we know from the Apocalypse World that it doesn’t stop the apocalypse, but hey, it’s worth a shot, right?

Well, no. Let’s look back at “The Song Remains the Same.” And if that title didn’t give away what would happen, I don’t know what would!

Anna escapes prison?

The episode picks up with Anna getting to Dean through a dream. She claims that she’s managed to escape Heaven’s prison. Because of the sigils Castiel put on his ribs, she can’t find him but she needs to talk to him.

It’s clear that this is some sort of trap. Castiel heads to the meeting place instead, angel blade at the ready. Nobody escapes Heaven’s prison, so Anna must have been brainwashed and be on some sort of mission. And she certainly has been.

Anna tells Castiel that to save the world, Sam has to die. Of course, Castiel doesn’t agree with that, so Anna heads to 1978 to prevent Sam’s birth — she’ll kill Mary and John Winchester. Castiel takes the Winchesters to the same time period, but it’s soon up to the brothers as the trip through time affects Castiel negatively.

Meet the parents

After initially protecting John from Anna’s first trap, the Winchester brothers get a chance to tell their parents as much as possible. Mary recognizes Dean from his first trip and makes it clear that she wants nothing to do with the hunter life. However, she doesn’t have a choice right now.

Since John knows nothing about hunting, Dean and Sam manage to get Mary alone and tell her the full truth, suggesting that she walks away from John. Maybe Dean and Sam not being born could actually save the world. However, it’s too late. Mary is pregnant with Dean.

So, the family has to stay together.

Michael saves the day

When Anna and Uriel show up, Sam is gravely injured in the fight. John tries to help and allows Michael to possess him temporarily. After all, Michael will want the apocalypse to happen as the loyal soldier. Michael kills Anna and sends Uriel “home.”

It turns out the Winchesters’ bloodline goes back to the time of Cain and Abel. They’ve been set up for this for centuries and the apocalypse must play out. Dean has to allow Michael in when it happens.

Michael heals Sam and sends everyone back to the present. However, Mary and John won’t remember anything, including everything Mary initially remembered from Dean’s first trip to the past. In 1983, Mary would still step into Sam’s nursery and be killed in the fire.
