More from Supernatural

The episode picks up with Castiel and Uriel coming for Anna. They need to kill her and Uriel makes it clear that Anna isn’t the innocent that she appears to be. Of course, the Winchesters aren’t willing to just take the world of this angel.

Before anyone can attack, a bright light appears and the angels disappear. It turns out Anna had managed to draw the angel banishing sigil with her blood on a mirror. This is the first time we’re introduced to this way of getting rid of angels and it certainly won’t be the last.

To keep Anna safe, the Winchesters decide to take her and Ruby to Bobby’s place. Bobby is on a job but they have access to his panic room.

Who Anna really is

This is when Sam can find out more about Anna. When he discovers Anna used to claim she had another father who was mad at her, Dean decides to call in Pamela Barnes in the hope they can unlock some of Anna’s memories. Suddenly, Anna realizes that she was once an angel, one who chose to become human by calling to Earth and giving up her grace.

The way angels and grace fall is like a meteor, so Sam tracks down where this grace could be based on meteor reports. Sure enough, an oak tree grew where the grace landed. By the time the group gets there, the grace is gone.

While they learn of the grace, Anna gets another message over angel radio. The angels are threatening to return Dean to Hell if the Winchesters don’t give them Anna. Anna also shares that she knows what Dean did when he was in Hell and he can forgive himself for it. That leads to that steamy moment in the Impala between them.

Ruby turns to Alastair

While this happens, Ruby shows her true colors. She’ll give Anna over to Alastair as long as he lets her and the Winchesters go. Of course, he’s not willing to do that. He captures and tortures her, but Ruby is unwilling to talk. She will take him to the location though.

Meanwhile, Uriel pays Dean a visit in his dreams. He has Anna’s grace and makes it clear that he knows Dean’s weak spot. Dean now has a choice.

When they awake, Uriel and Castiel take Anna. Dean shares that the choice was Anna or Sam.

In this moment, Alastair and Ruby show up and a fight between the angels and demons begins. During the fight, Anna is able to get her grace off Uriel and becomes an angel again. In this process, Alastair disappears and the two angels chose to leave.

We then learn that Ruby never betrayed anyone. Sam had planned this all along, knowing that bringing angels and demons together would cause a fight and potentially save Anna.

Dean opens up about Hell

With Anna gone in the wind and the Winchesters alone again, the two pull off to the side of the road for a beer. This is when Dean decides it’s time to open up to Sam about what really happened in Hell for those four months.

No, it wasn’t just four months. In Hell, those four months felt like 40 years. During that time, he went through torture day after day. Alastair was the one torturing him, offering him the chance to get off the rack if he tortured others.

After 30 years of torture, Dean gave in. He feels guilty because for 10 years, Dean had been torturing souls in Hell.
