When the Winchesters look like they’re not going to make it out of a hunt alive, they’re saved by another hunter. Just what did it mean for the brothers in Supernatural Season 5, Episode 17? It’s time to delve into the episode with this throwback recap.

Saved by a pastor

While on the road, driving away from demons, the Winchesters are saved by hunters. The hunters douse the demons in holy water and use Enochian to exorcize them immediately. They call themselves the Sacrament Lutheran Militia, a group of hunters who have gathered together to prepare for the coming apocalypse. Pastor Gideon seems to run the group, but it’s soon clear there is someone else in charge.

Lean Gideon is the one in charge, through her visions that come from Heaven. One of those visions is that the people need to follow the Angels’ commandments without question if they want to reach Paraside. That means no gambling, no drinking, and no premarital sex.

Dean wants to know what Paradise is like, finding out from Leah that there will be a major battle and then the Chosen will get the planet. There will be no monsters, disease, or death. Dean is one of the Chosen who will inherit “Paradise,” and he’ll be around the people he loves.

Sam learns another truth

While Dean talks to Leah, the local barman, Paul, is unimpressed with the plans of the angels. Sam joins him and the two get drunk together, talking about the supposed plans.

When Sam gets back to the motel, Dean isn’t interested in the town. It’s up to them, after all. They’re not the monsters. Sam isn’t the only one drunk — Castiel drank a liquor store. While Dean goes out for a walk, Castiel and Sam talk about what’s really going on in the town.

Dean finds out that Gideon isn’t certain that the actions of the townsfolk are right, but Leah assures him that the angels want them to get to Paradise. However, when Dean gets back to the motel after seeing one of the followers kill Paul, he learns that Leah is also dead. That creature is actually the Whore of Babylon, a creature that appears during the apocalypse to damn humans to hell.

She can only be killed by a true servant of Heaven using a cypress branch. The Winchesters think that Pastor Gideon must be the person to do this. When the Winchesters and Castiel go to see Gideon, Leah manages to incapacitate Castiel and keep the Winchesters at bay. Gideon is thrown to one side but Dean manages to grab the branch and kill Leah.

How can he when he’s not a true servant of Heaven and has no faith? Sam realizes that Dean is considering saying yes to Michael. Despite Dean saying he isn’t considering this, he drives to see Lisa Braeden with a message: in an ideal world, he’d want nothing more than peace with her and Ben but that’s impossible.
