It looks like the writers are trying to redeem Mary for those who have disliked her actions recently. She and Dean have a heart-to-heart in the Supernatural Season 14, Episode 17 sneak peek.

The CW has released a sneak peek for Supernatural Season 14, Episode 17. It’s time for Dean and Mary Winchester to have a heart-to-heart as they deal with the latest problem.

For a long time, Mary hasn’t been likable for many. Most of that is due to the writing. I actually never blamed Mary for needing time away from her now-grown sons. I couldn’t even imagine finding myself 30 years in the future with the last things I remembered being my kids still being kids. But there wasn’t enough time on Mary to help develop her character, especially when she wanted to stay in the Apocalypse World to keep those hunters safe.

It looks like the writers are trying to make up for that. During the heart-to-heart with Dean, Mary shows regret for not being around. She’s “hard” and “closed off.” And it sounds just like someone else we know.

Yes, she sounds very much like Dean, and even he knows it. He’s forgiven Mary for her need to be away from her sons. Over time, he’s understood that feeling of suddenly being around them 30 years in the future, when they’re grown men. And he admits that he and Mary are very much alike.

I’m not sure this is going to go far for those who have already come to dislike Mary. Part of me thinks it’s too little too late for some people, but it’s an attempt. I do love getting the chance to see more Dean and Mary time but I’d also love to see some Sam and Mary time as that’s been missing over the last two seasons.

One thing I will say is that this conversation worries me. These types of conversations usually happen when we’re getting close to saying goodbye to a character. I’ve already wondered whether Mary Winchester is going to die and this could be the setup for that happening.
