During the Supernatural Season 14, Episode 17 sneak peek, Mary and Dean have a heart to heart. Is this a sign the Supernatural writers are trying to redeem Mary Winchester?

It looks like the Supernatural writers are trying to redeem Mary Winchester. The sneak peek for Episode 17 shows Mary admit to some of her faults. While it could be too little too late, it could also be a sign of something darker to come.

There’s no doubt that the fans have a problem with the character. No, not every fan. But there are many who don’t like her for “abandoning” her sons when they needed her — but we’ll ignore the fact that she had been brought back from the dead 30+ years later and had a lot to figure out.

Over time, the writers have tried to add her back into the story but they’ve always found a reason to keep her separated from her sons. Season 14 seems to have changed. While she’s been away, it’s been with the Winchester brothers’ blessings and she’s been in contact with them. It does look like there’s an attempt to help Mary and her sons bond.

Yet, this could be too little too late. It looks like the redemption has come a season or so too late and more was needed at the very beginning of the season.

What I’ll say is that the redemption has me worried. When a character goes through some sort of redemption arc, it usually means something bad is coming. All this feels like Mary Winchester is going to be written out at the end of this season, something I’ve feared for a few weeks now.

It’s worth bearing in mind that the final episodes of the season would have been written before the announcement Season 15 would be the end. So, if Mary is going to die in Supernatural Season 14, it’s not to help set up the final storyline next season. It’s either because there’s nothing left for Mary in the story or because it was always planned for the Season 15 storyline.

Of course, it could just be a redemption to make Mary a bigger part of the final season. In that case, it may not be too little too late.
