Supernatural recap: What happened to Mary Winchester?
Supernatural Season 14, Episode 18 delivered an emotional episode packed with flashbacks. Here’s a look at the events.
In Supernatural Season 14, Episode 18, we got some answers, plenty of shouting, and lots of flashbacks. We went in fearing for the bond between Castiel and Dean but ended full of tears and fear for absolutely everyone.
It’s time to delve into the events of the episode. Just as a warning: there are spoilers for those who haven’t watched it yet.

The episode opens with the Winchesters getting back to the bunker. They need to figure out where Jack and Mary are, which involves Rowena. That’s when we get the clip from the sneak peek, with Castiel admitting the full truth to Dean.
Dean isn’t happy but right now, they need to find Jack. After tracking his cell, they head out to the farmhouse Jack and killed Nick (where Jack returned after jumping around the world and saw a hallucination of Lucifer from his subconscious). The Winchesters find Nick’s burned out body and a blast size that’s angelic but bigger.

There’s no sign of anyone else. Angrily, Dean lashes out at Castiel for keeping the secret. This is just like Dean and I’m glad the Supernatural writers kept this consistency in Dean’s character. As much as I don’t like seeing him lash out, he’s done it every. Single. Season.
Castiel offers a heartfelt apology, admitting that he was scared to tell Dean and Sam the truth. He was scared about Jack. It’s cut off when Rowena calls to admit that Mary Winchester is nowhere on the Earth.
Jack turns to Rowena for help
Just as Dean suggests they turn to Rowena for help bring Mary back, Jack seems to have the same thought. He turns up at her house, admitting that he killed Mary but he didn’t mean to. He just wanted Mary gone for a second and that second was enough. Now Jack wants Rowena to use the Book of the Damned to bring Mary back.
There is a spell, but there’s a catch. They need Mary’s body to finish everything off. Of course, there is no body now. If the spell is performed without a body, Mary will come back wrong and she won’t help.
So, Jack decides to send her back to her house, giving him the chance to perform the spell instead. All he manages to bring back is Mary’s body. It at least gives the Winchesters some closure, allowing them to burn the body on a hunter’s pyre. It’s worth noting Sam stops Castiel from comforting Dean knowing this bond is fragile.
The Winchesters show up to see Mary’s body but Jack takes off before they can talk to him. He’s left alone with his thoughts — the thoughts of Lucifer in his head. Jack is left with the thought that he can never trust the Winchesters.
Odds & ends
- Cass decides to turn to Heaven for help, hoping to find Mary up there. While calling out for Naomi, it’s Duma who shows up with news.
- Mary is in Heaven, a special Heaven, and she’s happy. Mary is now whole — and Castiel saw Mary with John.
- There were a bunch of flashbacks of moments that had obviously been filmed at earlier points in the season and stored for us. Were they deleted scenes that Supernatural decided to put in? I’m specifically thinking of that flashback with Hiatus Beard Sam.
- Sam is the ever-reasonable one, pointing out that they’ve all been lying to themselves about Jack, forgetting just how powerful and dangerous Jack is. It makes Dean admit what he’s been ignoring, too.
- Mary Winchester carved her initials in the table in the Men of Letters bunker with her sons’.
