After years of development, there are certain personality traits that have remained consistent in Supernatural Season 14. One of those is Sam and his ability to remain level headed.

Despite all the grief and the pain, there are certain personality traits the Winchester brothers have kept over the years. Sam Winchester has mostly remained the level-headed out of the two brothers and that was something we were reminded about in Supernatural Season 14, Episode 18.

As Dean fell back into the habit of shouting at and blaming others for the events, Sam took a step back. He realized that while he was angry and scared about losing Jack, it wasn’t Castiel’s fault. It wasn’t his fault and it wasn’t Dean’s fault. Not solely, anyway.

They all played a part in this. Each one of them ignored the warning signs about Jack.

Out of all the characters, it’s been Sam who has consistently been able to break through Dean’s walls. He’s been able to help Dean admit his own fears and feelings, and in Episode 18, it was Sam who was able to make Dean admit that he’d ignored the warning signs.

After 14 seasons, we’re still getting these brotherly moments. We still get a chance to see Sam and Dean connect in ways that no other character has been able to do on the show. Yes, Dean and Castiel have their bond and Sam and Castiel have had theirs. There are other characters who have come in and helped with development, but in the end, it comes back to these two brothers.

They are the yin and yang of the show. While Dean will react, Sam steps back and thinks carefully about a situation. When Dean was angry at Mary for wanting to stay in the Apocalypse World, Sam understood and found a way to fix the problem of possibly losing Mary again. When Dean forced Kaia into working with them, Sam remained calm — and was, like us, shocked at the way Dean had handled the situation.

Supernatural Season 14, Episode 18 was so beautifully consistent. It makes me love Robert Berens’ writing even more.
