By Mark Kristl
Mandy learned an important business lesson in Last Man Standing Season 7, Episode 20. Elsewhere, Kyle and Chuck heard some of Ed’s life stories.
Last Man Standing Season 7, Episode 20 continued the storyline of Mandy’s fashion business. Earlier this season, her proposals were rejected by a larger company, but Mandy (Molly McCook) continued building her business. What she needed in Season 7, Episode 20 was money to fund more of her designs. When she asked her parents for the money, Mike (Tim Allen) instead taught her a lesson about business.
At Outdoor Man, Kyle (Christoph Sanders) and Chuck (Jonathan Adams) discovered Ed (Hector Elizondo) recorded his daily life for years and he wanted to transcribe those audio files into a book. The problem was Ed’s entries were boring. With a little prodding from Kyle and Chuck, Ed shared some stellar life stories.

Yass Queen
Last Man Standing Season 7, Episode 20 was entitled “Yass Queen.” This title focused on the storyline around Mandy’s business. Mandy’s sales were lacking, so she pondered whether to hire a spokesperson or, as she referred to s/he, an influencer. The dialogue was funny, especially with Jen’s share about Ping Ping.
Mike invited her to join him at a meeting with a sales rep named Celia Powers (Melissa Peterman). At the meeting, Celia and Mandy quickly bonded over their love of fashion, all while Mike didn’t understand their sayings. Celia asked Mandy to show her some designs, and Mandy was hooked. She found a mentor.
Mandy returned home with news that Celia wanted to bring Mandy’s designs to retail, but Mandy needed money to fund these creations. Mandy asked for her parents to fund her business, but Mike declined. Vanessa (Nancy Travis) wanted to give Mandy the money, but Mike felt it was necessary for Mandy to learn to work hard to earn money for her business. Vanessa acquiesced, and Mike set out to help Mandy in a different way.
Later on, Mike gave Mandy a proposal. He had been unable to sell some pants, and he needed Mandy’s help. If Mandy altered these pants and increased their sales, Outdoor Man would give her a percentage of the profits, which in turn she would use to fund her business designs.
Celia was not thrilled to hear of this change in events, even though she refused to give Mandy the money herself. Mike had a feeling Celia would want some money from this deal, so he called in two of his associates.
Needless to say, case closed! Mandy learned that in business when you don’t have much money, you have to creative and wise with your money. Rather than simply accept a check from her parents, she will work harder to sell those pants for Outdoor Man, aiding her father’s business and bolstering her own. While there are only two episodes left this season, it will be interesting to see how Last Man Standing furthers Mandy’s fashion business.
Ed’s life story
At Outdoor Man, Ed revealed to Kyle and Chuck that he recorded himself so he could one day turn those recordings into a book. Kyle readily volunteered for the task, and Chuck supported the notion of Ed as an author. Since his retirement from Outdoor Man, Ed has a street named after him, he is engaged, and he wants to be an author.
As Kyle transcribed the recordings, he tried to find humor in them, but to he and Chuck’s chagrin, those recordings were boring. Kyle feared how Ed would react, so Chuck helped him out.
They presented Ed with all the interesting things from the recordings. All told, it didn’t fill out a whole page. Upon learning this news, Ed was mildly upset. Both Kyle and Chuck reassured him that his life is interesting, he is a fabulous storyteller, but what did the gum reference mean?
Ed revealed the gum came from when he first arrived in Vietnam. Terrified out of his mind, a veteran service member gave him gum to remind him of home, where he was safe. To this day, Ed keeps gum in his pocket as a memory of how he overcame his fear in Vietnam.
Both Kyle and Chuck are impressed by this story, but they question why Ed didn’t record that. Ed informed them that he is a storyteller to people, not one to record his own voice. Kyle volunteered to help transcribe Ed’s life story. Ed will usurp J.K. Rowling on that mountaintop yet. When presented the offer, Ed turned into a hard negotiator.
Ok, so there was no negotiating. While Kyle struggled to find his place at Outdoor Man earlier this season, he is a loyal good friend, and Chuck and Ed both recognized that in Season 7, Episode 20. Although Ed served as best man at Kyle’s wedding, he is truly a father figure to Kyle.
Last Man Standing Season 7, Episode 20 was the 150th episode of the series. In a few days, there will be an article highlighting this accomplishment.
