Netflix canceled The Santa Clarita Diet featuring Drew Barrymore and fans are devastated. Should another network pick up the series?

For fans of the Netflix zombie infested show starring Drew Barrymore, Santa Clarita Diet, the highlight of this year was the release of the third season via Netflix in late March. The low point comes just a few weeks later with Netflix canceling the show despite its very enthusiastic fandom.

Santa Clarita Diet is a “zom com” that explores the life of a suburban mother and real estate agent who becomes part of the undead. As a one of a kind creation (The Walking Dead is too morose to compare), SCD has several reasons it’s a big winner of hearts as a series. For those that love zombie culture, SCD offers a different approach to zombies that incorporates the same humor as a comedy with back to back hilarious buffoonery.

Another reason the show works so well is that the humor never takes away from the story content. There are always multiple plots working that keeps the audience invested. This is all while following the life of a working woman who is figuring out how to consume the human flesh she needs to survive without having the authorities on her tail. Did I mention that there are horror fest levels of gore and blood?

The constant red flags that alert suspicions from neighbors as well as law enforcement is the main reason why the show can easily give you anxiety. An accidental uneaten finger left here or another displaced body there, and the family is quickly on the radar of some official. In the end, watching the show will have you hoping that Drew Barrymore and her devoted husband (who else would help kill and bury a body?) don’t get caught and live happily ever after.

All of this zombie goodness didn’t go unnoticed. There are some legit hardcore SCD fans out there that binge, re-watch, and take advantage of their Netflix access. But now that the show was canceled any fans of the series will sadly have to settle for three seasons of reruns for the rest of eternity. Unless, of course, another network or streaming studio was to save SCD.

It would have been a farfetched idea years ago, but as of recently, there have been quite a few network heroes that have picked up fan favorite shows. A good example would be the time Fox canceled Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but the series was then salvaged from the wastebasket by NBC. What the networks need to realize is that SCD has a substantial audience, so the numbers are there for profit. And just like dating, droves of fans will watch it after it’s cancellation because they’ll realize what they almost lost.

No network or streaming service has come forward to scoop SCD into their arms just yet. But the complaints from loyal fans will soon reach the executives that matter, and it’s only a matter of time before they start deliberating whether SCD is worth rescuing. All that’s needed to get the ball rolling is a save Santa Clarita Diet hashtag.
