One reason I found the Supernatural Season 14 finale bittersweet (and not a reason you think)

I found the ending to the Supernatural Season 14 finale slightly bittersweet. You’re probably thinking of all sorts of reasons, but I bet it’s not this one reason.

Supernatural Season 14 has been a mixed season. Some episodes I loved right away, some I enjoyed after a couple of viewings, and others didn’t quite click with me. The finale has been one that I’ve had to watch twice to fully appreciate, but there is still one moment that is bittersweet.

There are spoilers if you haven’t watched the finale yet. Proceed with caution.

I know you’re likely going to think that it’s because one particular character felt odd compared to previous times he’s shown up. Or you’re probably thinking that it’s because a particular character died.

Well, if you’re thinking along the lines of a character death, you’re sort of right. It’s not that it was the death but what the death meant.

That character death was, in fact, Jack. God of all people killed him and he was sent to the Empty. Meanwhile, the Winchesters and Castiel faced the horde of zombies heading their way that God has raised from the dead. And this is where the bittersweetness comes in.

These zombies were so much like The Walking Dead it was hilarious. In a way, it’s been something I’ve wanted to see in a long time. Yet, zombies have always been slightly more human than brain-eating monsters. It’s something Jack pointed out as he was trying to make friends. He’s had this fascination about zombies for so long. Remember how his face lit up when he thought zombies were attacking in Season 13’s “Tombstone?”

And this is where his death is bittersweet. While he’s in the Empty, the Winchesters and Castiel are fighting the creatures that he’s always wanted to see. Out of everyone, he’d be excited to finally see the dead rise and walk towards them looking for brains to eat. As the camera pulled upward and we saw the zombies swarm in, all I could think was, “if only Jack was here.”

Hopefully, Jack will be brought back from the dead by the Cosmic Entity and Death!Billie. Hopefully, he’ll end up in the cemetery with the others. I would love to see his face when he gets to see real zombies.
