Game of Thrones: Without Sansa, the Battle of Winterfell wouldn’t have been a success
It looked like Sansa Stark did nothing during the Battle of Winterfell. However, it wasn’t about during the battle for her. Without her role in Game of Thrones, the Long Night wouldn’t have happened the way it did.
As usual, there are spoilers in this post if you haven’t watched Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 3 yet. You’ve been warned!
Sansa Stark didn’t do too much during “The Long Night.” That’s not all that surprising considering she’s the political mind and nothing like her sister’s ninja assassin ways. However, that doesn’t mean she wasn’t needed in Game of Thrones. It was because of her that the Battle of Winterfell was a success for the living.

Let’s just start with how she kept the Northern people happy and together while Jon was away getting Daenerys on his side. She’s been the one running Winterfell all this time, standing up against the naysayers and forging bonds that would be needed later.
While she wasn’t happy with Jon’s decision to bend the knee, she figured out why it had to happen. She couldn’t have told the Northern lords and ladies to leave, but she didn’t. She looked at how to make sure everyone could survive until the Night King’s arrival.
But Sansa’s role actually goes back to Season 6. While her marriage to Ramsey Bolton was horrific, it would help lead to the Starks retaking Winterfell. Jon could have tried to keep the fight at Castle Black, but Winterfell was a better strategic position against the Night King. Yet, his initial reason for taking his home back was because of Sansa and everything she’d been through.
During her escape to Castle Black, she managed to helped shape Theon into the good man he was during the Battle of Winterfell. It was everything that happened to her that made Theon stand up against his torturer. Sansa was the one that helped him become a man again – become Theon Greyjoy again.
She also met Brienne, which brought our first female knight on Game of Thrones into the fold. Her trust in Brienne would lead to Jaime remaining alive and by Brienne’s side to fight – and you know the two made the perfect team even if one of them possibly should have died as the wights piled on top of them.
Sansa may not have had a physical role in the success of the Battle of Winterfell, but she had a role leading up to it. As Bran made it clear, everyone went through their journeys for a reason and Sansa’s was to gather the right people together for Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 3.
