Grey’s Anatomy returns from hiatus as part of a crossover event with Station 19. Let’s look at the best moments from Season 15, Episode 23.

After a week-long hiatus, Grey’s Anatomy has returned with a special crossover episode with another Shondaland show, Station 19. I admit, I haven’t ever seen Station 19. I hope to watch it at some point but until then I’ll just briefly summarize their involvement in this episode.

The fire chief of Seattle is brought into the hospital after he collapses in front of a florist where he was buying flowers for a woman named Vic. Apparently, she proposed to him and he didn’t say anything. But he realizes he wants to say yes and is desperate to get back to her. By episode’s end, he has left the hospital against Maggie’s orders – despite her just learning he may have been exposed to some kind of chemical. It’s this cliffhanger that propels the episode into the second hour of the crossover.

For now, let’s recap the eight best moments from Season 15, Episode 23 of Grey’s Anatomy.

8. Teddy comforts Jo.

The past few weeks have been brutally hard for Jo and they don’t get any easier in this episode. While she does return to work, she makes a mistake that devastates her and the patient involved. Gus, the kid with the golden blood, is still waiting on a donor. Jo takes a call from a woman who claims she has a patient with the same blood type. Before confirming the details, Jo jumps the gun and informs Gus’ mother, Alex, and all the doctors involved on his case.

Except when she calls the woman back to iron out the fine details, she realizes the woman mistakenly believed Gus was the donor, meaning all of the excitement was for nothing. Knowing she will now have to take away a mother’s hope, Jo is devastated. Teddy offers her some comfort and tries to help her through the difficult situation. I like seeing these two together, they were a great team in the “Silent All These Years” episode too.

7. Meredith makes a rash decision.

When a father comes to the hospital seeking medical attention for his daughter, who has an intestinal blockage, Meredith is forced to the extremes to ensure they can provide the care she needs. He is an asylum seeker and was recently separated from his daughter for months at the border. Now he has a visa and is trying to keep himself afloat at his job but has been unable to afford insurance. State coverage is also out of the question because he apparently makes “too much” money for it, yet can’t afford treatment.

The system is broken and, in this case, it certainly failed him. Meredith is unwilling to let that happen so she commits insurance fraud and puts Ellis Grey down on the insurance form since her kids are well covered. Obviously, Richard is pissed when he finds out but he is willing to help Meredith and become complicit in her lies. Though he claims he’s not doing it for her, but for the father, who is now complicit in Mer’s scheme. It’s a tough situation and speaks to the painful horrors of the American healthcare system.

6. Link helps Levi understand what Nico is dealing with.

Nico and Levi are still on the outs in the aftermath of their fight from the last episode. Levi can’t quite understand what Nico is dealing with since he killed a man. His patient didn’t just die on the table, he died because of a mistake Nico made.

Link tries to help Levi understand this and realize he needs to give him space to come to terms with the gravity of the situation on his own terms. One day, odds are, Levi will make a mistake too and he should hope Nico will be there for him in the same way when that day comes.

5. Owen apologizes to Amelia.

Therapy is proving beneficial for Owen. For the first time in a long time, he feels as if he’s been able to find clarity. He actually apologizes Amelia for calling her “incapable of love”, one of the worst things he’s ever said to a woman on this show (and there have been many). I’m still not a fan of Owen as a character but I did appreciate him making amends with Amelia and clarifying that he was projecting his own feelings on to her. I hope she’ll be able to move on with Link and maintain a relationship with Leo, too, without Owen continuing to be in her life.

However, by episode’s end, Owen is back in therapy and admitting he intends to “tell her he loves her with a clear mind.” That means Owen is going to be confessing his true feelings to Teddy or Amelia by season’s end! Ugh. Just when you thought the triangle was over. I do hope it’s Teddy this time though, I’ve had enough of Owen/Amelia, they’re not good for each other.
