After Dean sacrificed his life for Sam following the youngest brother bleeding out in the eldest’s arms, the prospect of the season thereafter being sunshine and rainbows was a laughable subject. Here are the most heartbreaking moments of Supernatural Season 3.

From a truck being driven by a black-eyed demon to psychic boot camp where Yellow Eyes pitted those, he turned in 1983 against each other — when it comes to Supernatural’s season finales, we spared a second to think we were prepared for whatever cliffhanging arc descended us into another hellatus.

Say a second because the last few minutes of Season 3 was unprecedented to the inevitable stab in our chest we had felt before. Spoiler alert: Dean has one year to live.

In the style of a pre-adolescent team free will, Sam is calling the shots as he tries to slither the duo out of their current predicament. Eh? If only we could do the same as the final season approaches.

The infamous samulet

Over the years there have been several articles of clothing and ancient objects shelved as necessary items in the Winchester toolbelt and while it might have met an unfortunate fate in a hotel room’s wastebasket, the samulet is still one of them.

Coming from a life where the road is their only constant, the brothers had to find the little moments in between in order to have a sense of normalcy. Enter Christmas. The tree is never littered with lights.

The eggnog is usually spiked and they can always count the number of presents gifted to the other on one single hand, whether it may be skin magazines and shaving cream from the nearest gas station or fuel for the Impala itself. Then there are other years, younger in comparison, where Dean leaves a present underneath the tree and therefore lets Sam think it was from John.

In “A Very Supernatural Christmas” Sam rips the wrapping, but there’s a Sapphire Barbie doll waiting for him. The next: a cha cha baton. Inspecting the toy, Sam realizes their father never came home.

In spite of Dean trying to convince him of the latter, he then spills out that the presents were stolen from the fancier house down the street, which probably has one present too many. Sam then passes his brother a solitary parcel meant for John. It isn’t much by any means; small in size, wrapped in a comic-book strip and yet holds the essence of the series.

Begrudgingly accepting the gift, there’s a gold amulet wrapped in its confines. He pulls it over his head and wears it for years to come. Acting as a reminder when life becomes a little too tough or demonic; alike to during those moments where their parents weren’t around, they’ll always have each other.

A slice of normalcy

The people intertwined into the brother’s lives are never by random and rather parts of themselves they’ve either held onto or lost in a lifetime before. When it comes to Lisa Braeden, she represents the difference between a hunting lifestyle and the longing Dean has for a white picket fence.

Dream A Little Dream of Me” finds Bobby in a coma where he’s fighting against the very reasons why he became a hunter, but the coma isn’t by the typical definition. Instead, he’s stuck in a dream world and in order for him to be saved the duo must take the same poison Bobby has injected.

They wake up in the Impala, in the place they fell asleep, out in the middle of the woods. While it begins to rain and the soft croons of a song from the decade before is heard over the quiet rustle of the leaves, a light is shone on Lisa sitting on a blanket with a picnic basket beside her.

Dean loses himself in the idea for a second; the idea of having someone to go home to, someone to raise a child with and someone who most importantly loves him. Only to disappear into nothingness. Turning to face Sam, he denies ever having the dream.

Sam vs. mystery spot

If we were to put another damper onto the series then there would be a point to be made that often times whenever one of the Winchesters die it’s beside another. This is ever true for “Mystery Spot” when Sam gets caged into a constant cycle of watching Dean live out his final moments.

Ranging from the most peculiar when a taco goes down the wrong windpipe to a somewhat mundane source of death in comparison to how they’ll most likely go out: a car running him over. Hearing the 90s balled echo through the radio system, Sam’s mechanic in his movements as he’s played out the day’s events a hundred times before.

This time, he spots an elder gentleman at the diner and something’s off. Sam pins him to the wired fence as his face morphs into the trickster’s. Rather the erratic and alive archangel who has a penchant for creating television-inspired dimensions and time wormholes. His #1 lesson: whatever move Sam makes he’ll be unable to save Dean.

Sam wakes up the next morning and in spite of it being a Wednesday, it’s his final day with Dean as he dies in his arms in a parking lot. It’s in the months following where he gets a snapshot into life without his brother.

Time’s up

There have been times when the Winchester brothers have been doublecrossed from demons to angels alike yet when it comes to Ruby, we as the audience almost felt betrayed. Perhaps it’s the Katie Cassidy effect.

Or we were gunning for her to be the saving grace when all hope seemed lost. While this time Lilith had inhabited her body it still provided a foreshadowing into the darker shades of her character.

When the clock chimes midnight in “No Rest for the Wicked” it’s almost as if a hellhound was waiting patiently in the shadows. Dean’s quick to notice its presence before telling Sam and the demon. In his tow, they race to a nearby room and layer the ground with salt. Then the windowsills.

Being ever so manipulative Ruby or Lilith asks Sam for the knife, the very same one which would’ve possibly killed her, so she can help keep watch. Dean’s quick to realize that it’s not Ruby but before Sam’s able to do anything about it, her hand flicks to push him into the nearest wall and Dean onto the table.

Her eyes rolling back into her skull to reveal a stark white. Opening the door, the hellhound barrels through and rips Dean to shreds. All while Sam watches on.
