NOS4A2: 5 shocking moments from Season 1, Episode 5
By Mads Lennon
Vic and Manx finally meet face-to-face with devastating consequences for someone Vic cares about. Weâre recapping the 5 most shocking moments from NOS4A2.
Weâve reached the mid-way point of NOS4A2âs first season. Charlie Manx and Vic McQueen have finally come face-to-face in what will probably be the most cordial of all their meetings.
Charlie isnât keen on killing Vic, at least not at first. He has other ideas for how the two of them could work together. However, he is an immortal monster, and if Vic doesnât comply, he has no qualms with viciously killing her or her loved ones.
As we edge into the back half of the season, itâs clear things are about to get much more complicated for Vic and co.
5. Drew and Vic kiss.
This moment wasnât altogether shocking so much as I cannot understand why NOS4A2 is spending so much unnecessary time on this Craig-Vic-Drew love triangle. Does anyone care? I havenât read the book, but if this was part of the book, I assume it was better written. In the show, it comes across as filler.

Maggie and Vic have way more chemistry, and itâs been established; Maggie isnât straight. If Maggie were a boy and she had the scenes she did with Vic, then she would be the apparent main love interest. If the series wanted to go there, why not just create a compelling love story between Vic and Maggie? I guess weâll see how it all pans out.
4. Vic has a meltdown.
In the aftermath of discovering Sharonâs body and her failure to find Haley, Vic has something of a meltdown in Tiffâs garage. She gets into the linoleums (linoleums Tiff throws a fit about) and paints. As in, paints everything. She creates countless renderings of the Wraith, Charlie Manx, and other ghastly images. Tiff proclaims she âdidnât sign up for this,â code for, âI donât want Vic in my house.â
And Vicâs spineless father doesnât stand up for his daughter â no surprise there. Chris sucks. He doesnât even have the guts to tell her that verbally, instead, he lets Tiff do the dirty work and doesnât open his mouth to say a single thing. It looks like Vic might wind up back with her mom, or maybe with Maggie.
3. Charlie Manx asks Vic to be his âmother.â
The moment many of us have been waiting for finally arrives. Vic gets a special invitation to Christmasland. Sheâs told to come alone. Of course, she and Maggie donât listen. Vic goes inside a bus station to meet Manx while Maggie peruses the parking lot to find any information she can on the Wraith. The meeting goes as weirdly as youâd expect.
Manx doesnât want to hurt Vic if he doesnât have to. He wants to take her under his wing, teaching her how to gain something back from what her Innscape takes from her the same way he does. Vic isnât interested. Manx is a monster, and sheâs not going to change her mind.
Not even when Manx offers her to a place at Christmasland â to be the âmotherâ to all the children there. Ick. What is it with Manx and Bing and their mommy issues? Actually, mommy issues are a continuous theme in this show; itâs interesting.
Needless to say, Manx and Vic donât walk away from their meeting on good terms.
2. Maggie gets hit by the Wraith.
Maggie does find the Wraith in the parking lot. Then she makes the mistake of touching it. Charlie instantly senses his knife is being tampered with. The Wraith comes to life, seemingly of its own volition, and runs Maggie down.
Vic steps outside to witness it happen, and she watches Charlie take off in his car. It makes you wonder if Vicâs dirt bike is capable of something like that.
As for Maggie, I think sheâll be okay. For now, sheâs stable and in the hospital.
1. Vic confesses to the detective.
Vic refuses to leave Maggieâs side while sheâs in recovery. It doesnât stop the detective whoâs been sniffing around since Vic found Sharonâs body from peeking her head in though. Tired of lying, especially because her lies are so blatant, Vic takes a massive risk and tells the detective the whole truth, including the Innscapes, the Shorter Way Bridge, Manx, and even Christmasland.
We donât see the detectiveâs reaction to this, but itâs not going to be good. In a preview for the next episode, it becomes apparent Vicâs parents, and the cops believe she should be put into a psychiatric hospital.
Odds & Ends
- Vicâs mom is going to get rid of her dirt bike mark my words. Maggie pointing out Vic losing her knife would be catastrophic and her mother already discussing the fact needs to get rid of it? Sheâll have to find a way to do without or get another knife.
A new episode of NOS4A2 titled âScissors for the Drifterâ premieres July 7th at 10/9c on AMC.
