Dean has to figure out how to slay a dragon. Meanwhile, Sam deals with getting his soul back. Here’s what happened in Supernatural Season 6, Episode 12.

Dragons play a part in Supernatural Season 6, Episode 12, and no, the Winchesters have not found themselves in Game of Thrones. Hey, GoT the series wasn’t even around at this point — just the books!

It’s time to take a look back into the episode, titled “Like a Virgin.” After ending one bigger story arc, this is the episode to start off our next one.

Sam gets his soul back

More from Supernatural

At the end of the last episode, Death gave Sam his soul back, equipped with a wall to keep the torture from Lucifer’s Cage behind. How would it do? Would Sam remember anything? We don’t get to find out right away.

Sam remains unconscious and Castiel isn’t even sure if Sam will ever recover. When Sam does wake up, Castiel leaves. It’s soon clear that Sam remembers nothing of the last year and a half, and naturally, Dean doesn’t want to reveal anything in case it destroys the wall Death gave. However, Bobby struggles with letting Sam off the hook for trying to kill him.

The brothers get back on the hunt, where they learn out that one of the occupants of a plane crash, Penny Dessertine, has disappeared. Her boyfriend was the pilot of the small plane, found 17 miles away and burned.

Sam does ask questions, such as why Dean is still hunting. There’s some sort of truth there. Dean shares that he tried the normal life with Lisa and Ben but things didn’t work out. Dean doesn’t seem to have many regrets because his brother is back.

A case of the missing virgins

It turns out that all the missing victims recently, including the plane crash victim, are virgins. A woman who escaped an attack shares that her attacker was a large bat. She even has the claw marks to prove it, but when she woke, she was alone and her promise ring gone. She wasn’t “pure.”

As all the research they carry out comes up with dragons (that may live in sewers instead of caves), Bobby suggests that Dean sees Dr. Visvak, an expert on lore from the Middle Ages. She shares that only a blade forged with dragons blood will kill a dragon, and she has the Sword of Bruncvik.

This sword is gound in stone and only a knight ready to slay a dragon will be able to pull it. Dean is sure that he’s the one, but the sword doesn’t budge. Dean has to resort to explosives, which accidentally break the sword in half!

Sam gets the truth

When Sam realizes that Bobby is acting strangely, Sam decides to call on Castiel. Sam even goes as far as tricking Castiel into telling him all about the last 18 months.

There’s not much time to deal with this information. Dean returns with the broken sword and they need to go in search for the dragon’s lair. When they get there, they hear the screams of women, who happen to be the missing women. Two dragons appear, but only one escapes as Sam kills the other.

The Winchesters do retrieve a manuscript, which happens to be written in ancient Latin and is made from human skin. All Bobby can figure out is that the manuscript talks of Purgatory and the “Mother of All Things.”

We get to meet Mother at the end of the episode, kickstarting the next arc of Supernatural Season 6, an arc teased earlier in the season. The escaped dragon meets with another, who has been able to capture six women. The dragons open the door to Purgatory with an incantation and throw one of the women in. She rises from the ashes as “Mother.”
