Supernatural’s ending shouldn’t be anything like Game of Thrones’ finale

The Game of Thrones series finale aired on Sunday to some scathing reviews. At least we know Supernatural’s ending shouldn’t be anything like that.

It’s impossible to please everyone, and I will state that before getting any further into this post. There are always going to be people unhappy with how Supernatural ends, regardless of the storyline the writers choose. However, I don’t think it’s going to be anywhere near as bad as the criticism against Game of Thrones‘ series finale.

The GoT finale aired on Sunday. Without giving away the spoilers (I’m not that mean), there were complaints about storylines that didn’t make sense, character and storyline development that felt wasted and theories and plots that seemed completely overlooked.

Ending a series just isn’t that easy. There’s so much to tie up, with plotlines sometimes impossible to fit in. And I don’t think Supernatural‘s will ever be perfect. I think there are still going to be elements that will leave us scratching our heads or making us wish one or two things were thought about.

However, I don’t think the criticism is going to be on the level that GoT has faced. While, like Game of Thrones, the storyline has never been happy, I don’t think we’re going to feel like we’ve all wasted years of plotlines and character development. And this is going to be for one major reason: the two main stars are heavily involved in the storyboarding process.

This isn’t just a job. It’s not just another show. And while I’m sure that’s the case with the GoT actors, they didn’t quite have the same involvement over the years that Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki have had. That’s partially because the Game of Thrones cast is so big. At least SPN has had two actors — and only two — who have been there in every single episode (all 327 when the show ends).

Ackles and Padalecki have a vision of how they want the story to end. They’ve often been vocal about if something their characters have done isn’t right. Sometimes it’s too late to change this but, on other occasions, they’ve been able to make a few quick edits or switch lines around knowing how fans will react.

Because we have two actors (well, more when you consider how passionate the likes of Misha Collins, Alexander Calvert, Mark Pellegrino, and others have been throughout the years) who are so focused on delivering something that works for them, the writers, the showrunners, and the fans, SPN‘s ending should be something we’re proud of seeing.

If you’re worried about the ending because of what you saw or heard about on May 19, don’t be. But do remember that all types of art (and that’s what a TV show is) will be subjective. I personally didn’t mind the Game of Thrones ending. There were moments that didn’t quite make sense but I didn’t hate it. But I do suspect I’ll love Supernatural‘s ending more, whatever it may be.
