The 10-episode prequel series is set 1,000 trine (years) in the past, before what we know of the Gelfling, the Skeksis and Mystics, and even Aughra. Although we are seeing an entirely new story unfold, there is enough reference to the Dark Crystal film through context that you could watch this first and it will still all work out.

No matter which way you take it, it’s going to be great for you. If you saw the film, this will start answering some questions you may not have even known you had. If you watch this first, the film will turn into the sequel when you watch it later. We’re talking beyond Star-Wars-level prequel skills.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance accomplishes the goal any prequel series attempts to reach. The creators, involving multiple legacy situations stemming right off of the original Dark Crystal film, have brought a modern presentation of the classic story to a new generation. Meanwhile, those who remember the beginning will absolutely not be disappointed.

The awe I anticipated is completely present as we watch the masterful and legitimate puppetry and voice work sorely absent from every other modern-day presentation we have been given on our screens. The absence of computer animation gives this show a real validity deserving of its namesake.
