We know Adam Milligan is returning to Supernatural in the final season. Just how could that be possible? Here are five ways it could work.

Andrew Dabb confirmed that we’re finally getting some closure to the Adam Milligan storyline in Supernatural Season 15. After nine seasons of being stuck in Lucifer’s cage, it sounds like he’ll be out. But will he?

While we’ve had confirmation Adam is back, we don’t know how or why. Will he be released with the other souls from Hell? Is Adam even in the cage or is it just Michael? We’ll need to wait for the final season to find out, but here are the top five ways he could be brought back.

5. The Winchesters finally save him

The Winchester brothers are going to need all the help they can get. That means turning to people who have helped them or they’ve helped in the past. One of those people could be Adam—although I doubt he’d even want to help them and wouldn’t blame him for that either!

Alternatively, it’s certainly possible that instead of getting Adam to get some extra help, they could decide it’s finally time to save him. This is the least likely possibility to bring Adam Milligan back into the story, though. The Winchesters have pretty much abandoned him, and then would wonder why he wouldn’t want to help!

4. God let Adam out

God let a lot of souls free in the Supernatural Season 14 finale. There’s a high chance he let souls out that we didn’t get to see on the screen. One of those souls could have been Adam.

He may have opened Lucifer’s cage to get both Adam and Michael out of there. This would have caused a problem with Michael being around out for revenge against the Winchesters—and maybe that’s why Billie needs Jack’s help.

There is a chance that God opened the door to allow Adam to walk free, assuming that Adam would want revenge. Of course, we have no idea who Adam would blame for his situation. God, the Winchesters, angels, someone else? It would be fun to see God assume something and get it terribly wrong for himself.

3. Adam escapes for revenge

With the souls from Hell getting out, would there have been a window of opportunity for Adam? If he saw a glimmer of a chance, he may have got out to escape. What Adam Milligan will be like in Supernatural Season 15 is up for debate considering he went through nine Earth years of Hell, which would easily be 1,000 Hell years. That’s a lot of time to be tortured.

One thing that would likely be on his mind would be revenge. That could have even kept him sane throughout all that time. Revenge against the Winchesters for leaving him there? Possible. Revenge against the angels for not getting him back to Heaven? I could see that.

How about revenge against God? After all, God is the one that wrote Adam going to Hell. It was destiny, and it would certainly be something to get revenge for.

2. Jack decides to release Adam

Does it have to be the Winchesters or God that gets Adam out of Lucifer’s cage? Is there a chance that someone else will get him out? My guess is that Jack could be the one to do it. He did manage to wake Castiel up from the Empty after all.

Billie needs Jack for something now that God has caused “the end.” Does that “something” involve getting to those who have helped the Winchesters in the past (which could bring Eileen into it) or those who have just been connected somehow—such as Adam.

If not Jack, there are many others who could get Adam out from the cage. Billie is one of them since we know Death can breach the cage. Otherwise, how did Original Death get Sam’s soul back?

1. It’s not really Adam

Let’s be honest. There’s a high chance that Adam Milligan isn’t actually in the cage. In the Supernatural Season 5 finale, Michael said “Adam isn’t here right now.” That could have meant that Adam was somewhere deep within in mind (the way we saw Dean when Apocalypse Michael took over) or that Adam is genuinely not there (like the way Jimmy is no longer inside his vessel).

There is a chance that Adam made a deal with the angels. He would give up his vessel to Michael if he got to go to Heaven. So it’s not actually Adam that’s coming back but Michael from this world, ready to bring about the apocalypse again.
