The Leviathans were officially introduced in Supernatural Season 7, Episode 2. Meanwhile, Sam had visions of Lucifer and Hell. Here’s a throwback recap of Hello, Cruel World.

Supernatural Season 7, Episode 2 quickly picked up from the events of the premiere. It was time to meet the Levaithans properly, while also watching Dean and Bobby try to help Sam. Here’s a look back at the episode, titled “Hello, Cruel World.”

It looked like Dean and Bobby were going to be toast at the hands of the Leviathans. However, with Castiel’s vessel not able to hold them, the Leviathans retreated. That gave Bobby and Dean the chance to get to Sam, who was dealing with Hallucifer telling him that he was still in Hell.

The end of Castiel?

After helping Sam snap out of the hallucination, the three left from Team Free Will followed Castiel to a reservoir. The Leviathans force Castiel to disappear into the water. A vortex erupts and black ooze spreads around the water. The Leviathans can get anywhere through the pipes. It’s time to regroup and figure out the next steps.

It looks like it’s the end of Castiel. All that is left is his trenchcoat.

Sam deals with more hallucinations

If only Castiel was the single problem Team Free Will had to deal with. While the Leviathans killed—one of those situations being in a hospital Sheriff Jody Mills was in while having her appendix removed—Dean and Bobby needed to help Sam. Hallucifer remains a problem, tormenting Sam to believe that everything happening around him isn’t real.

Sam opens up to Dean and Bobby. He’s not having flashbacks. He’s seeing Lucifer and he’s struggling to figure out what’s real and what’s not.

Worried about Sam, Dean decides to turn on the GPS on Sam’s phone just in case Sam tries to flee. Dean continues to insist that he’s fine, even though he’s struggling with everything going on at the moment.

A murdered swim team

The Leviathans are hungry. Some of them murder a whole swim team, but it turns out “the boss” wants them to be more discreet. The murder of the swim team has alerted Dean and Bobby. The smear of black ooze makes it clear to the hunters that the Leviathans were here.

It looks like some are on their way to Sioux Falls, so Dean alerts Sam and Bobby before heading back. At the same time, Bobby gets a call from Jody, who has witnessed her hospital roommate killed by the Leviathans. Bobby has to head to the hospital to help Jody, while Dean gets back to Sam.

The Leviathans believe the hospital is the perfect place to avoid raising suspicion. One of the Leviathans, Edgar, is impressed but heads off on business for “the boss.” Bobby gets to the hospital in time to get Jody out so he can head to the morgue to find out about her former roommate.

Meanwhile, it turns out that Sam isn’t with Dean at all. The Dean Sam is with is another hallucination. Fortunately, Sam has his cellphone so the real Dean can track him.

Sam struggles with what’s real and what’s not. Only the injury is something he knows is real, so he presses on it and the real pain snaps him out of the hallucination.

Attack at Bobby’s

When Bobby is attacked by one of the Leviathans at the hospital, he escapes and warns the brothers. The Winchesters head back to Bobby’s, where it’s now just a burned out husk. The two search for Bobby, but they’re attacked ny Edgar, who breaks Dean’s leg and knocks Sam unconscious.

Dean is able to drop a car on Edgar to kill him and then tries to wake his brother up with no success. When Sam does wake up, he starts seizing. When the EMTs arrive, they share that they’re going to Sioux Falls General Hospital, which is where the Leviathans already are.

Meanwhile, back at the salvage yard, Edgar recovers from the fallen car. Will anything be able to take out the Leviathans?
