The Resident Season 3 premiere: Did Jessie or Kyle die?
For the whole summer we’ve wondered one thing. Would Jessie or Kyle die in The Resident Season 3 premiere? The show wasted no time in telling us.

Throughout the summer, we’ve had one major question for The Resident. Who was coding in the bed? Would we learn that Jessie or Kyle had died?
Unlike New Amsterdam‘s Season 2 premiere, which left us wondering about the fates of multiple characters throughout the episode, The Resident Season 3 wasted no time in telling us who had died.

We opened to Nic in a field of sunflowers talking to Jessie. Did that mean Jessie had survived? Maybe both had survived? We quickly learned that Nic was just imagining her sister. Kyle appeared with an urn so they and Conrad could scatter Jessie’s ashes.
Sadly, in a flashback, we saw that Jessie had died. Conrad had tried his best to bring her back. Even Nic started chest compressions, but it was all for nothing.
After this, we learned that it had been a month since Jessie’s death. Kyle is, understandably, angry. His baby girl had died in the hospital. Nic hasn’t been able to return to work yet, but she doesn’t blame the hospital or Conrad for Jessie’s death. She knows that Jessie’s heart was weak, which made it difficult to recover from the transplant surgery.

In a way, I’m glad that the show opted for Jessie. Many shows would opt for a fairytale and bittersweet ending. We’d get Jessie make it through the surgery to get a chance at a new life but Kyle lose his life to save his daughter. The Resident has never been afraid to give us the realities of the system, and this is another one of those cases. There was a slim chance from the beginning that Jessie would survive and she wasn’t going to beat the odds.
The Resident Season 3 will see Nic deal with grief and loss. At one point, she tells Mina that her one job was to protect her sister and she failed. However, we all know (and Mina points out) that isn’t Nic’s only job. She quickly proves her need when a mother with a baby shows up at the ER—the mother knows she needs the hospital for her child but is scared of the cost and wanted the free clinic.
I’m sure we’ll get Nic back at work fighting for that free clinic. That way, people don’t have to needlessly die because of the flawed healthcare system.
