From Supernatural Season 11, we finally got the full confirmation that Rob Benedict’s Chuck was really God. Rob found out the truth much earlier.

We’ve all had our theories over the years of Supernatural. One that was finally confirmed in Season 11 was that Chuck was definitely God. It had been hinted at a few times before then, including in the 200th episode, but only confirmed years after the character first appeared. Rob Benedict found out much earlier, though.

During SPN Tor 2019, a fan asked Rob when he learned that his character was actually God. Did he only find out when the writers chose to reveal it in Season 11? How about a little earlier?

It turns out that Rob Benedict found out from Eric Kripke himself. After the Season 5 finale, Rob asked Eric what the sudden disappearance meant. This was the moment that many fans questioned whether the character was God or not, and it turns out that it was the reveal of sorts. Eric made it clear to Rob that Chuck was more than a prophet.

“Swan Song” was also Eric Kripke’s way of putting himself in the story. In this episode, Rob’s Chuck became Eric, telling the story of the Winchesters. It was Eric Kripke’s swan song just as much as it was, at one point, going to be the Winchesters’ ending.

Yet, Rob Benedict never gave the game away. One thing Eric Kripke asked was that Rob allow the fans to have their own theories or their own thoughts on the matter. It sounds like Eric was never going to reveal Chuck’s true identity, leaving it up to interpretation as art is. Of course, the show continued, passed hands, and the reveal finally happened.

Yet, Rob would also allow fans to make up their own mind. He knew he was God and said that he “thought” he was God on numerous occasions in conventions. What he didn’t do was make it clear that he knew this, and I love that we had this for so long. Leaving the mystery was perfect, especially for a character like God.
