Rowena stepped in to help the Winchesters trap the souls of Hell. One of the problems for her on Supernatural has been the lack of her own storyline.

I try to stay as positive as possible about Supernatural. One of the issues that I’ve noticed recently is the lack of storyline for Rowena. In Season 15, Episode 2, she popped in to help the Winchesters deal with the souls of Hell. While that was great, that was all she really did.

There’s so much more a witch like Rowena could do. In fact, when she was first introduced, she was this great antagonist against Crowley and the Winchesters. Even after that, she had some of her own storylines as she figured out who she was and what she really wanted—that ultimate power wasn’t everything.

Then there was this great moment where she connected with Sam Winchester over their shared experience with Lucifer. We had this chance to see her scared and the vulnerable when it came to Crowley’s death. But since then, things have been lacking.

Rowena now pops in just for a quick assist. Within those quick assists, there’s the flirting with the odd guy. In Season 13, she flirted and slept with Gabriel. In the last episode, she flirted with Ketch. While these moments have given her something to do and added comedic relief, the storylines have been lacking.

As a powerful witch, Rowena could be more confident in herself. She could take on a case almost alone. Instead of just being there for a quick assist, she could be a more integral part of the storyline.

Sadly, she’s certainly not the only character who has even been sidelined like this. Sometimes it’s hard to even see Sam get a real storyline instead of Dean. I doubt we’ll get to see her do more in the final season, especially since I have this feeling she’s going to be killed off in Episode 3, but that doesn’t I don’t want something more for this powerful, strong, funny woman to do more in the series.

While there will be many saying “but Supernatural is about the Winchesters,” that doesn’t mean other characters shouldn’t get decent storylines or be utilized in great ways. It’s poor writing when side characters are forgotten about and only brought in for fan service than for a storyline.

Rowena is more than her connections to men. The show has had a problem with writing for female characters from the very beginning, and sadly, it doesn’t look like the writers have really learned.
