Most TV shows involve a lot of shipping, making it feel like a woman always needs a man. Dollface takes a step forward, making it all about friendship.

Hands up if you spent the whole weekend binge-watching Dollface, the new Hulu original comedy. If you didn’t, then you need to tune into it right now. This is a show that will restore your hope in TV shows giving us a real view of women in life.

It all starts with Jules (Kat Dennings) being dumped by her boyfriend of five years. While you’d initially think it would be a series about a woman trying to get her boyfriend back, it’s not. Instead, the show takes Jules on a journey of finding herself again. More importantly, it takes her on a journey of finding her friends again.

Over the course of her relationship, she left her best friends behind. And it’s something that we can all be guilty of doing. Our friendships can change when we get into new relationships. One thing Dollface reminds us is that we need to keep working at those friendships. They won’t be around in five years time if we don’t make an effort.

Instead of sending Jules on a journey of attempting to woo her ex back, she goes on one of fixing her friendships. She turns to Stella (Shay Mitchell) to find a way to win Maddison (Brenda Song) back. And it’s not just about the three of them, as they welcome Izzy (Esther Povitsky) into their friendship group.

These four women take on challenge after challenge. And they help each other grow.

This isn’t just about Jules figuring out who she is alone, although her friends do help. We see Izzy become this nervous woman who is pretending to be called Allison transform into a (slightly) more confident person. More importantly, she realizes that she needs more experiences and it’s time to stop holding back. There’ll be more of that in Dollface Season 2 if it’s renewed.

Then there’s Stella who has spent her life coasting through it. She gains on her looks, but she wants that to change. She’s tired of being the fun friend and applies to business school. There are knocks to her confidence, but her friends are there to help pick her back up and help her through all this. Again, more of this development to come in a second season.

Finally, Maddison is the one with a boyfriend. Part of her storyline does revolve around him. I won’t share what happens with this relationship, but it is important for her development. While she pretends to be the confident one who doesn’t need a man, she realizes that she’s falling into habits of her friends at times. Maybe sometimes she’s a little too needy for him.

Dollface becomes a series that is about four women who help and need each other. At one point, there’s a Wizard of Oz parody, which suits the overall growth of the characters, as well as their personal insecurities and doubts. It showcases this continued need to talk to each other, lift each other up, and just be there as a friendly ear.

I suspect the second season will bring in some relationships with men, but at the same time, there’s still going to be this focus on four women who support each other. It will continue to be about for girlfriends who are each others’ rocks.

This is a series that is refreshing and fun. While so many other shows continue with the shipping of characters, this is one that is purely about friendship and personal growth. We need more like this.
