What an episode of 9-1-1! As exciting as it was, we were left with one of our own potentially suffering radiation poisoning. Will that be the storyline?

There are spoilers for 9-1-1 Season 3, Episode 9 in this post.

9-1-1 delivered one of its strongest episodes yet when it came to showing the teamwork of the firefighters. It also showed the willingness they have to put their lives on the line. The downside is that means one of our own is in danger of radiation poisoning.

Going up like Chernobyl?

More from FOX

The 118 was called out to a tunnel with a magnesium fire. While dangerous, that would have been something relatively easy to keep under control. At least, a lot easier than the fire that it turned into. The truck driver admitted that his truck actually had radioactive material in it. More specifically, it had Cobalt-60.

If that exploded, Eddie told us that it would mean the whole place would be another Chernobyl. They had to keep that fire under control until hazmat got there.

Bobby did what any captain would. He sent his men out of the tunnel and remained with the trapped truck driver, focused on keeping the fire to a minimum to avoid the radioactive chemicals from exploding. However, that put his own life on the line. After the situation, he had to go straight to a decontamination tent and get some tests run.

Will Bobby be okay?

Let’s be honest, we’re all like Athena right now. She’s terrified that her husband is going to die of radiation poisoning. We all are.

While the doc (played by Supernatural‘s Christian Keyes) offered some reassurance that the levels are low but higher than he’d like, it was clear that there is something to be concerned about. As a doctor, he’s cautious, and now Bobby and Athena are.

Bobby is trying to focus on the positives. He feels fine now and he’ll head back to the hospital every week for his tests to make sure there are no lasting effects. However, Athena is worried that there is something. She was last spotted looking up the signs of radiation poisoning.

So, will Bobby end up being diagnosed with radiation poisoning? I have this feeling that we’ll see Bobby collapse or start suffering some ill effects at the end of the fall finale, leaving us with his fate in the balance until the show’s return in March 2020.

But let’s be honest. If the radiation poisoning was severe, we’d have already started to see signs. While Chernobyl had its questionable moments in history, it focused well on the symptoms of radiation poisoning. We saw how the firefighters and the bystanders were affected. Bobby’s exposure was minimal compared to theirs and he received decontamination treatment immediately afterward. They all knew what they were dealing with.

If he does have some radiation poisoning, it’s going to be on a smaller scale. There are some treatments known for radiation sickness on a smaller scale, but it can take two years of treatment. And there’s no guarantee that someone makes it through the other side unharmed. Someone is more likely to suffer from cancer in the future, which was brought up when they discussed the truck driver.

While we’ll get a scare, I have a feeling the 9-1-1 writers will work on an infection that needs treating. Unless the writers are willing to invest in months and potentially seasons of treatment storylines or Bobby is going to be killed off at the end of the season, I don’t quite think the writers will go the radiation poisoning route. Hopefully, it’s a short term storyline with a very happy ending.
