In Supernatural Season 6, Dean made a decision that would change everything for him. He made Lisa and Ben forget him, but it was a terrible mistake.

We’ve seen the Winchesters make plenty of mistakes in the past. One that has never come up since it happened in Supernatural Season 6 is when Dean wiped the memories of Lisa and Ben. For today’s Dean-mas post, I want to focus on that and speculate whether it could crop up in Season 15.

Let’s be honest; Dean wiping their memories was never going to protect them. It was a way for the writers to take their story out of the picture but wasn’t thoroughly thought through. We’ve seen instances of demons going after loved ones because they know the Winchesters will drop everything to save the people they care about.

At least most will have the advantage of knowing who the Winchesters are. They’ll know they can call on Sam or Dean to help out when they need it, even if they know it’s a trap.

The Braedens now don’t have that benefit. They have no idea who the Winchesters are or that demons and monsters exist. Ben was in direct danger when Dean first met him partially due to the lack of knowledge of the monster world. Going back to that was a ridiculous mistake that Dean clearly hadn’t thought through completely.

It would be interesting to see if this storyline is picked up again at some point in the final season. While Cindy Sampson is working on other projects, Nicholas Elia hasn’t acted on TV or in movies since 2014. There’s the chance that he could reprise his role, sharing that something has happened to Lisa. Maybe it kick-started his memories or Dean learns of something happening and realizes that Ben is on his own—and it’s partially Dean’s fault for wiping the memories in the first place.

Sam knew that it was a bad idea. At that point, though, the Winchesters were struggling with a lot of problems and they weren’t really on the same page. It’s not surprising that Dean made it clear that he didn’t want Sam to speak about them. However, this is something that needs to be brought up because it’s not safe.

Maybe what would have been better would have been to wipe just Ben’s memory if someone’s really had to be wiped. That way Lisa could have contacted Dean if necessary or left a note for Ben to call Dean should something happen to her. Or maybe Dean’s memory could have been wiped of them for their real safety.
