Wednesday TV ratings: SWAT up, Single Parents down
SWAT and Criminal Minds ticked up in the TV ratings on Jan. 29. Meanwhile, Single Parents struggled and it was a mixed night for The Goldbergs.
NBC opted for reruns of the One Chicago series, while FOX had a night of specials and reruns. Meanwhile, The CW shows are all safe. So, the TV ratings post for Jan. 29 is all about the CBS and ABC shows.
It wasn’t a great night for ABC, but also wasn’t a terrible one. The Goldbergs and Schooled both saw the demos up but the total audience down a small amount. However, they’re healthy ratings to suggest that the shows will be renewed for another season.

While Modern Family got a rerun, Single Parents struggled. The total audience was steady but low. Meanwhile, the demo dropped 12% to a 0.5 rating. This was, arguably, a questionable renewal last season, so I don’t thing the comedy will get a third season.
ABC ended the night with Royal Divide: Harry, Meghan, & The Crown. It didn’t perform all that well, at the rear of the timeslot. It was even behind a rerun of Chicago PD and a new episode of Stumptown would have likely been a better decision.
Meanwhile, CBS benefitted well from a night of specials and reruns, starting with its own special. Super Bowl Greatest Commercials 2020 was the top performer of the night in both metrics, pulling in 7.15 million viewers and a 1.0 demo rating. Those good figures passed on throughout the night.
While we’re not concerned with shows renewed, canceled, or ending, it’s worth noting that Criminal Minds saw a 30% upward tick in the audience and 28% upward tick in the demo. These are important figures mainly for SWAT.
The police reboot has struggled in the Wednesday night timeslot up against Chicago PD. It shows that the move was a bad idea when the series ticks up during PD reruns. Jan. 29 saw the demo up 42% and the audience up 30% continuing the idea that it’s a timeslot problem and not a show problem. Unfortunately, I don’t think that matters for CBS and the series will be canceled after three seasons.
