It’s not really a season of Riverdale if Jughead Jones isn’t in mortal danger at least once. The misanthropic writer and detective, played by Cole Sprouse, has had a hold on the hearts of fans since he first asked Reggie if he could spell necrophilia.

As such, whenever his life is threatened, fans begin to wonder if this will be the season that they lose Jughead for good. Season 4 came close with a perceived death that had viewers shook, but that was thankfully revealed to be a fake out.

Now that we’re in season 5 of the show, Jughead’s life is once again under threat. Before the season went on a four month hiatus, he’d been kidnapped with only Tabitha Tate being the last person to see him before he was snatched.

While the preview for season 5B shows the writer alive, it does have us questioning just how long the show plans to tease the demise of Jughead Jones. Will fans be saying goodbye to Cole Sprouse before Riverdale ends? Here’s what we know!

Cole Sprouse on his time as Jughead Jones on Riverdale

Sprouse put rumors of his departure from the town with pep to bed back in May 2020 during a Variety Live! interview. Distractify reports the actor said the following about his continued time as Jughead:

"For me, as long as the show that I’m working on — Riverdale — is one that I continue to have fun on and work with all my closest friends, which I do, it’s a privilege to be a working actor…I think to sit and stare at something in the face — and you can laugh at yourself and you can criticize something you’ve worked for — but I think it’s incredibly pretentious and ignorant to look at something that you are blessed to have and go like, ‘I’m done."

It doesn’t sound like we’ll be saying goodbye to Jughead anytime soon on Riverdale even though Sprouse acknowledges in the interview that things have a shelf-life.

In fact, in March of the same year, his co-star KJ Apa had disclosed to the LA Times that he’d re-upped on his contract which would put him on Riverdale until the end of a potential season 7.

Seventeen has speculated that Apa’s fellow castmates, including Sprouse, likely signed similar contracts. If that’s true, Jughead fans won’t be saying goodbye to him in the near future.

Riverdale was renewed for a sixth season which will premiere behind The Flash starting Tuesday, November 16. So, if you’re worried season 5 will be the last we see of Cole Sprouse’s turn as Jughead Jones, don’t be.
