While Halloween is frightful and the time for some of those great horror movies to shine, there’s still plenty of kid-friendly and family-friendly options to enjoy! It doesn’t all have to be scary. Some of those fun options include the Garfield Halloween special, the Halloweentown movies, Halloween classic Hocus Pocus, and even Twilight for those who are older. One program you definitely don’t want to forget to add to your October watch-list is It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!

While the Peanuts special has been a staple on television for many, many years, unfortunatley this year isn’t going to be one of them. The Halloween Charlie Brown event won’t be airing on TV in 2023. I know, it’s not the news you want to hear! I’m disappointed as well. This is due to distribution rights, which are held by a streaming service. So while we won’t be able to see it on television, there’s still a great option to watch the special.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is currently streaming on Apple TV+. The platform costs $6.99/month if you’re not already a subscriber. But wait! There’s actually a way to stream the Halloween special for free! Mark you calendars on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023 and Sunday, Oct. 22 when Apple TV+ is streaming the program for free, TVLine reports. So, there’s still a way to watch! If you just plug in your laptop or connect your phone to your TV, then it’s like it is being broadcast!

The history of the Charlie Brown Halloween special on TV

Charlie Brown and the Peanut gang graced our television screens for the very first time in 1966. The animation is based on the comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz. Upon its debut, it aired on CBS from 1966 until 2000. The broadcast was then moved to ABC and ran there every Halloween season up until 2020.

Apple Inc. bought the broadcast rights to all the Peanuts specials in 2018. Even so, they were allowed to be broadcast on ABC until 2020. The following yea in 2021, PBS was the only network to air the animated program on television. However starting in 2022, Apple made it so it’s streamer, Apple TV+, was the exclusive home to the Halloween event. Even so, the platform has made it available for free on certain days in October, just like it will be in 2023.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown follows Linus who has a strong belief in a creature, the Great Pumpkin. His friends don’t hold that same belief though, but Linus is determined to prove that the creature is real. And he does so by spending the night alone in a pumpkin patch. The special stars voice actors  Peter Robbins as Charlie Brown; Christopher Shea as Linus Van Pelt; Cathy Steinberg as Sally Brown; Bill Melendez as Snoopy; Sally Dryer as Lucy Van Pelt; Gai DeFaria as “Pig-Pen, “Glenn Mendelson as Schroeder and Shermy, Ann Altieri as Violet and Frieda; and Lisa DeFaria as Patty.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is currently streaming on Apple TV+.
